A couple of days ago, some media outlets shared the news that Volkswagen is starting the construction of a new Plant in Balochistan, Pakistan. The news was later confirmed by nationally trusted auto blog, Pakwheels.

According to the news, the construction will start within this quarter, while some claiming that the construction will begin on the 10th of May. According to Pakwheel’s sources, “The plant will be constructed in approximately 2 years”.

It all began in 2018 when the German auto giant Volkswagen AG and Premier Motors limited signed an agreement to manufacture commercial vehicles in Hanover. An investment of $135 million was agreed for the construction of an assembly and production plant in Pakistan.

It is worth mentioning that according to the official website Volkswagen AG is the parent company for Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, SEAT, SKODA, Ducati, MAN, SCANIA.

Partnership in Pakistan

Reportedly, the land for this project was acquired in 2019 and the plant was to be fully operational by 2021.
The development comes in the aftermath of ‘category-A Greenfield investment status’ awarded to Karachi-based Premier Motor Limited under its agreement with Volkswagen.
This came as the Auto Policy 2016-2021 has incentivized the competition in the local market and big names are entering the Pakistani market.
The plant is going to be completed over a span of two years and will span over 900,000 square feet. Under the deal, the German brand shall be operating in Partnership with Premier Motors, the company selling Audi in Pakistan for more than 10 years now.

Production in Pakistan
The assembly plant will reportedly have the capacity of producing 28,000 vehicles per annum. According to the original plan, the construction was supposed to begin in 2020, but things got delayed due to the onset of the pandemic.
However, now that the industry is reviving, the construction is to begin soon.
Pakwheels has reported that Volkswagen will produce its famous Amarok truck and Transporter van in Pakistan. The truck would be a competitor of Toyota’s Hilus and Isuzu D-max in the market.

On the other hand, Transporter will compete with the Korean counterparts, the Hyundai Grand Starex and KIA Grand Carnival.

I would live to see WV Polo replacing Mehran.. Golf and Scirocco can fill up the gap of high tier small cars

Lokadi (in Punjabi means of the people). A great name for a national car. Also give impression of AUDI, Toyota etc from name. Doesn't sound a poor local name either.

Premier Motor Limited
This report is misleading. Volkswagen is NOT about to set up a plant. This is just another auto racket mafia about to set up a local 'darzi' cottage operation to fleece the Pakistani customer.

How so? This is not VW but a local mafioso under the name Premier. They will import kits for VW's and then bolt them together. Place a their markup on each bolted unit and make profit.

There are three giveways. First if VW were really serious they would move in themselves and set up VW Pakistan Limited. Secondly a proper car plant would need well over $1 billion dollars investment. Thirdly the production would easily be over 100,000 units if not over 200,000 with some exported. At 25,000 the number is too low.

For comparison. The French auto company Renault Marocco has a plant at Tangier Med -

The Renault-Nissan Tangier facility is arranged over 300 hectares and has an annual capacity of 340,000 vehicles, running six days a week with a staff of 8000 people. It builds four Dacia models: the Logan MCV, Lodgy, Sandero and Dokker. The millionth Tangier car rolled off the line in mid-July. The completed Dacias are transported by the new rail line directly to the dockside, from where they are shipped around the world.

This one plant is making 340,000 cars with 80% local source and soon to be increased to 500,000 vehicles a year sold across the world. Pakistan is far larger country than Marocco and needs proper auto industry. Not this "darzi" nonsense.

The auto industry in Pakistan will remain a joke until something like this takes place.

Agreed with what you've said but this is a start and a welcome alternative to Toyota Indus and Atlas Honda. The more competitors, the better though full-scale facilities are the need of the hour with integrated design studios and supply chain integration.

For that, the market needs to increase drastically to ensure feasibility
