Visit old village sitting on China-Myamar border, local guide tells the sad story why most villagers chose Myanmar citizenship over China's

Local guide told the visitors that when China and Myanmare negotiated over the demarcation of the border in the 1950's, local villagers had to make a painful choice, even they are the same people, all locals in this region are ethnic Thais, many villagers are related with each other or from the same families.

Government officials from both countries went to every house and village and asked them to pick sides and citizenship, local viillages can choose the country to join and citizens to become.

The local guide lamented that back then China was so poor and Myanmar was much better, so most villagers chose citizenship of Myanmar.

When asked about why every house hangs Chinese national flag, the guide replied that various warlords in Myanmar always fight wars very close to the Chinese border, their bombs occasionally landed inside China, locals hang Chinese flags to tell them here is China, they do it to avoid being shelled by bombs across the border.

Back in 1960s, Myanmar (previously called Burma), the Philippines and South Vietnam were projected by Western institutions (IMF, World Bank) to be the next industrialized countries in Asia after Japan. Now, except South Vietnam, which have been liberated and civilized by the North, the other twos are soon becoming the poorest of the poor in East Asia.

Lesson learnt: Stop listening to advices from Western institutions (including Japan). We are still paying for the shit from Japan. Most projects funded by Japan ODA in Vietnam are overpriced, poorly engineered and very poorly managed, leading to delay and cost overrun.

I do not say Japanese are not good. But following every advices from them stupidly is our own fault.

At that time Myanmar was one of the richest countries in Asia

Korean-British economist Ha-Joon Chang said that rich countries take away the ladder to prosperity, so poor countries cannot become rich.
Rich countries never tell us that they became rich countries through colonial rule, industrial revolution, and slave trade. They only tell us that as long as democracy, poor countries can become rich . it's a lie

at that time why would anyone want Chinese citizenship ?

and why would they want it today ?

what is the benefit to them

They are the same kind of people who will switch the citizenship happily again whichever country is richer in present time. They will not become the true citizen for any country.
