Vietnam's exports will grow 11-12 percent annually over the next five years to hit US$300 billion by 2020, according to new targets approved by the government this week.

Local media reported that one of the targets is to achieve a "sustainable trade surplus" after 2020. The country is expected to see a trade deficit of US$6 billion this year, despite a projected 10 percent increase in exports, to $165 billion.

One of the main solutions for Vietnam to achieve the objectives, according to the government, is to secure more free trade agreements.

Since Vietnam joined the World Trade Organization in 2007, it has signed many free trade agreements, even though some economists have questions the real impacts of those trade deals. Vietnam plans to continue expand its trading activities in traditional markets, including Southeast Asia, East Asia, Australia, the US and EU.

It also hopes to see "breakthroughs" in new markets such as Africa, South America, Middle East and India. Vietnam's exports hit $106.3 billion in the January-August period, up 9 percent year-on-year, official data showed.

However, the country still saw a trade deficit of $3.6 billion, as imports surged 16.4 percent compared to the same period last year.

not too bad: exports and imports continue to rise despite global slowdown. so the economic story is still intact. the government even predicts higher exports and imports, should TPP come in the meantime. the annual GDP growth rate could reach 8 per cent or higher. I´m NOT boasting everything is good now, VN is growing at a very low base. we have a long way to go. it is a long journey.

:cheers:China also has its target(2020),I think Vietnam will catch up with China about per capita GDP after some years. Not too long way to go(both China and Vietnam),I am optimistic.

Good for Vietnam and good luck. Always happy to see a country rise economically. I just hope they realize their future lays in a peaceful relationship with China, and not to try to counter and obstruct them in every way. A LOT of Vietnam's economy is dependent on China's investments and trade. And a 6bn trade deficit isn't horrible if you consider your yearly trade of about 350 billion dollars.

We are TPP nation while CN is not, so our stable growing export simply have Nothing to do with CN in the near future.

pls note that TPP deal is 98% complete

not realistic as china is miles ahead. unless a magic thing happens. for instance, discovering a gold mine.

china and philippines are the major markets.

However I like Yuanyang rice from Henan or rice from Northeast China, I don't like rice from Vietnam and Thailand. The rice granule of SEA rice is too solid.

Could be limited to Guangxi and Hainan, haven‘t seen vietnamese rice in local market, wonder how it taste
vietnam tradional rice market looks something like this. I prefer thai rice, it tastes better than viet rice. no idea how chinese rice tastes. I can go to a local asia market here, buying chinese rice and post here my opinion next time.

it is more or less personal taste, even depending on different cultures. germans for example like unsticky rice in a plastic or paper bag :D to prepare it you cook it in a boiling water for 10 minutes.

Like war,CCP collapse?
Oh..I calculate ideally
Vietnam(assume that 20years 8%)2000*1.08^20=9321
China 7600*1.07*1.068*1.063*1.06^12*1.05^5=23709

then 30years
9321*1.07^10=18335

then,Vietnam is close to developed country and will gradually catch up with us.

Then, we may have to burn some foreign factories again to force them transferring high tech to us to become a developed country
