VietJet Air, a budget airline from Vietnam, launched its maiden flight to Taipei Friday, and the carrier said that the new route has received warm welcome.
The first flight to Taipei, which was fully booked, took off from Ho Chi Minh City at 2:30pm Vietnam time and arrived at the Taoyuan International Airport near Taipei at 6:55pm local time, carrying a total of 180 passengers.
VietJet used an A320 aircraft to serve the new route. The plane was painted with the carrier's logo "VietJet" in English and its slogan "Enjoy Flying" in Vietnamese.
With the Christmas season approaching, flight attendants wore special deer horn hair ornaments to celebrate the maiden flight, while providing passengers with professional services. Many passengers said they were impressed with the service of flight attendants.
Among the 180 passengers on the flight was a Vietnamese magician who performed in front of other passengers and drew applause. On the flight, attendants also handed out gifts for the passengers, exclusively for the maiden flight, delighting them.
After the flight arrived in Taipei, VietJet held a ribbon cutting ceremony. Its flight attendants danced vigorously to boost the atmosphere, while Chinese traditional dragon and lion dances also attracted much attention in the airport.
Before the first flight took off in Ho Chi Minh City, VietJet executive president Luu Duc Khanh said that he expected the new service will provide more convenience to 400,000 Vietnamese who are living in Taiwan as well many Taiwanese investors operating in Vietnam.
Luu called for Taiwanese authorities to relax rules in the visa application process for Vietnamese visitors to Taiwan to strengthen tourism exchanges between the two countries.
In response, Huang Chih-peng, Taiwan's representative to Vietnam, said that Taipei will come up with measures to simplify the visa application process for Vietnamese visitors in an appropriate manner.
VietJet provides five round-trip flights between Ho Chi Minh City and Taipei every week. The return flight takes off at 8pm Taipei time in the Taoyuan International Airport and arrives in Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat Airport at 10:25pm Vietnam time.
VietJet said that the carrier is planning to launch services between Hanoi, the Vietnamese capital, and Taipei in mid-2015, and additional services between Ho Chi Minh City and Kaohsiung by the end of next year.
It said it is providing promotional tickets for its services to Taipei, urging passengers to log on its official website for more information.
