Venezuela Collapse 2016

. .
Add Russia and Brazil to the list: both of these countries are in deep recession.

It's funny how it's always the US that's predicted to collapse. Not only does this never happen, it's America's enemies that collapse. How ironic.

In the '80s the Soviet union was invincible and would herald the collapse of the US. It was the Soviet Union that ended up collapsing.

In the '90s Japan's economy was unstoppable and would overtake the US. It was the US's economy that ended up flourishing while Japan entered into a 20 year period of economic stagnation.

In the 2000s America was going to run out of oil and this would end its petrodollar hegemony - the BRICS were formed and Iran/Venezuela/others threatened US' interests. Besides China, the BRICS have failed to live up to expectations. Brazil and Russia are in recession. South Africa is no longer even the biggest economy of Africa. India has for most only experienced moderate growth and doesn't look like being a threat for decades if ever.

Oh and now Venezuela is you guessed it on the verge of total collapse, not America, Venezuela. Who could have guessed it :)

India will always follow moderate approach .We wont become threat anyone unless others try to play with our national interest.

bro, it's corruption 100%. Latin America is corrupt and it'll always be corrupt. whether the government is capitalist, communist, or socialist.

only way I see Latin America mitigating corruption at the highest levels is for complete transparency.

and so much of Venezuela wealth over the lost 17 years has been siphoned out of the country in the tune of $300 billion

"More than 100 people charged down the main thoroughfare in central Caracas chanting "No more talk. We want food." They got within about a half dozen blocks of the presidential palace before police in riot gear headed them off and began firing tear gas."

Congratulations To Bolivarian Socialism: Now The Chavistas Riot For Food In Venezuela

The central contention of that Bolivarian socialism, that Hugo Chavez led revolution in the economic affairs of Venezuela, was and is that the poor of that country deserve a better shake of the stick. And there’s nothing at all wrong with either that claim or that desire. It is an extremely rare person who actually revels in the poverty of others for example, we do generally think that the function of government is to make people better off. However, it does rather matter how you go about trying to achieve that goal. And a central contention of the free market types like myself is that you do not achieve that goal by adopting the idiot economic policies that Chavez and now Maduro have done. For if you try to do it that way then you will make those poor worse off, not better. And, let us be honest about this, making the poor worse off while trying to make them better off is not a good advertisement for that set of economic policies.

....

As to why this is happening, I’ve been vocal around here in pointing out that it’s a simple result of idiot economic policies. That desire to make people better off is just fine. But there’s ways of doing that which make sense, which work. The Nordic social democracies do rather well for example: they tax lots so that government can buy lots for people. This may or may not be to your or my taste but there’s no doubt that it works. And those same Nordics make very certain to leave a robustly free market churning along underneath that taxation. That’s rather what makes the system work. That isn’t what Chavez or Maduro did. Rather, they decided to go mess with markets and this is what has caused the current collapse.

Or, as Professor Hausman is far too polite to say and I am not: don’t use idiot economic policies.

And for us there is this stark little economic lesson. Yes, sure, you can do things about inequality, about poverty. My preference is to go flat out for economic growth and make the poor richer that way. Others might argue for a little more redistribution of what already exists. Those choices are rather a matter of taste: how neoliberal or how social democratic do you want to be? But whatever you or we do don’t go messing with markets. Not because markets are some sacred reification of the principles of the Godhead of economics, Adam Smith, but simply because messing with markets doesn’t work.

This is true of fixing food and toilet paper prices, as Venezuela shows, it is also true of fixing the price of labour or of rents, as the examples of the minimum wage and rent control show.

Dump US dollars and bonds. Blockade the Hormuz Strait. Flood the oil market. Arm minorities for a race war. And so on...

I have been here since '09 and every yr there is always a 12 yr old who thinks he know what the hell he was talking about. You would think that given all the economic, political, and military geniuses on this forum, why are their countries in even worse conditions than US.
