A V8-powered boat that can fly up to 7 metres off the surface of the water is set to change the way humans travel between remote destinations.

The AirFish 8 is a wing-in-ground (WIG) vessel designed by Singaporean company Wigetworks to help ferry passengers between tropical islands.

Because the vessel lands and takes off from the water, there's minimum infrastructure needed to provide access to distant islands or watery outposts.

Powered by a V8 car engine, the AirFish 8 can run on standard 95 octane petrol and carry six to eight passengers up to 482 kilometres.

It’s also four times faster than a standard boat: The AirFish 8 can hit speeds of up to 106 knots (196 km/h) – dramatically faster than the standard cruising speed of 25 knots held by most island-hopping boats.

The vessel's creators believe that because the AirFish 8 flies so close to the water it minimises the risk of damage if a crash were to occur.

"The Wing-In-Ground's simple system operability minimises the risk of flight accidents and technical errors that may arise from pilot or operator dependency," said Wigetworks.

"At a lower flight altitude and above sea-water, passenger altitude sickness or motion sea-sickness should also be significantly reduced.

"Should an engine hardware failures unexpectedly occur, the WIG is able to land immediately on an ever-present runway merely a metre or two below."

The Airfish 8 is currently in a pre-production phase, and Wigetworks expects the craft to be in operation in the second half of 2018.
