Ohio Begins One Year Deployment to 7th Fleet with Port Visit to Yokosuka
UNITED STATES - 28 AUGUST 2009

USS Ohio (SSGN 726) (Blue) arrived at Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan for a regularly scheduled port visit Aug. 29.

Yokosuka is the first port visit for USS Ohio, which has commenced a one year deployment to the 7th Fleet.

"It is great that our first port visit during this deployment is to Yokosuka, said Capt. Murray Gero, commanding officer, USS Ohio. "My crew and I are looking forward to visiting Yokosuka and the beautiful country of Japan."

Ohio is the lead ship of the Ohio-class submarines. As one of four in its class to be converted to a guided-missile submarine (SSGN) it is capable of carrying up to 154 conventional Tomahawk cruise missiles. The conversion also provides the SSGN with the ability to deploy Special Forces and serve as an underwater command and control base.

"I look forward to working in 7th Fleet during the coming year and hope Ohio is able to make a significant contribution to the Japan-America alliance and to the support of regional peace and stability," said Gero.

Ohio is homeported at Naval Base Kitsap - Bangor, Washington and currently serves under Commander, Submarine Group 7, headquartered at Yokosuka Naval Base, Japan.
