Seriously --- this is just going to make us jealous @SvenSvensonov , @AMDR , @F-22Raptor !

The littoral combat ship USS Fort Worth arrived in Sasebo on Wednesday, marking the first time one of the new class of ships has visited Japan.

The San Diego-based ship is also the first to deploy under the “3-2-1″ manning concept, which allows littoral combat ships to sustain a 16-month rotational presence without fatiguing the crew during the extended deployment.

It is named 3-2-1 because three rotational crews will support two ships and maintain one deployed ship. Two additional crew swaps will occur during the remainder of Fort Worth’s deployment, roughly every four months.

“We’re excited to be in Japan,” said Cmdr. Matt Kawas. “The Japanese are a strong maritime partner and we’re looking forward to bringing them aboard to show all that the LCS platform offers.”

Fort Worth is the second littoral combat ship to deploy to U.S. 7th Fleet as part of an initiative to simultaneously deploy up to four in the Asia-Pacific region by the end of the decade.

Fast, agile and mission-focused, littoral combat ships are designed to operate in near-shore environments and employ modular mission packages that can be configured for surface warfare, mine countermeasures or anti-submarine warfare. The Navy is building 52 in two variants.

Those are way too expensive for their own good.
Might be very advanced and capable, but when it comes to design philosophy, I prefer China's 056 Corvette design philosophy.

056 are cheap (60-75m each I read), easy to mass produce (25 produced already, and they just started in 2013), good stability for blue water sail (unlike the top heavy Molniya Class), good versatility with helicopter bay, and decently armed that they can be a credible threat to surface and air targets.

US Navy should balance the expensive, powerful ships like AB Destroyer (1.8 billion per ship) with mass producible cheaper shipsl. I think retiring the Perry Frigates and Spruance destroyers too early was a strategical mistak.

That philosophy is willing to let a couple of ships sink because there's enough more behind them to retaliate.

"America has no stomach for Empire".

Anyone who tells me who said the quote above gets a 'Thanks'. :)

I prefer to think of it as just being cost efficient and practical.
US LCS cost over 500M I heard.

It is a corvette. Smaller than a frigate.

Light frigate , more or less. Its full displacement is around 3,450 tonnes; the Perry class was 4,000 tonnes.

Basically, the LCS(s) of the USN will replace the role of the Perry Class and the Knox that preceded those.

3,000 tons full load. Smaller than India's Kamorta corvette. All warships are gaining in size. European frigates are now routinely 6,000 to 7,000 tons. China's 055 destroyers are 12,000 tons.
