LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar on Thursday took notice of the boy’s death of rabies due to the unavailability of the vaccine in Ferozewala, ARY News reported.

A report in this regard has been sought from Commissioner Lahore Division. Showing his resentment over nonavailability of anti-rabies vaccine in Shahdara and Meo Hospital, Usman Buzdar termed it as negligence of the concerned authorities.

He also condoled the death of the boy and prayed for his eternal peace.

The Punjab chief minister has also directed the concerned department to initiate an awareness campaign against the stray dogs.

On the other hand, the government of Sindh will soon start training sessions for municipal staffs to catch stray dogs and vaccinating them against rabies.

In the view of recent deaths owing to dog bite in the province, the Sindh government had decided to administer stray dogs with the anti-rabies vaccine (ARV). The project will cost Rs 300 million.

According to the government’s planning, master trainers from Africa will coach the staffs of municipal councils of Sindh. In every district, 2-3 centers will be established in this regard.

Moreover, the Sindh government has prohibited poisoning stray dogs to death

Right so all of a sudden people are dying of rabbies and at the same time vaccine is not available. WTF is going on. Is this deliberate or what. or the stray dogs numbers being increased. I mean never ever have I heard anything like this at this scale. WTF

taking notice after death repeatedly will not solve problem unless measures are taken before such incidents

since last year pharma sector is not importing the vaccine just because of dollar hike.

The halt in the supply of cheaper anti-rabies vaccine from India and China has led to an acute shortage of the life-saving drug in Pakistan’s Sindh province as it grapples with increasing incidents of dog bites, an official said.

Naseem Salahuddin, Director of the Rabies Free Karachi Programme, said that there is a big difference in the price of the vaccine imported from India as compared to the one purchased from other countries.

The vaccine imported from India costs Rs 1,000 (USD 6) whereas the drug imported from Europe costs a whopping Rs 70,000 (USD 446), the official said, adding that this life-saving drug is only available in the government hospitals in the country.

The shortage or absence of the anti-rabies vaccine has been witnessed in government hospitals in the Sindh province, including its capital Karachi as imports of the vaccine from India has stopped in recent months, while its import from China has been suspended.

It is not clear whether Pakistan stopped the import of the anti-rabies vaccine from India due to bilateral tensions after New Delhi scrapped Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in August.

There has been an increase in the number of stray dogs on the streets of Karachi in recent months, while in the past weeks, some 130 cases of dog bites have been reported from different parts of the province.

On Monday night, at least 12 people, including a police sub-inspector, in Karachi were admitted to hospital after a pack of stray dogs attacked them.

According to media reports, over USD 36 million of anti-rabies and anti-venom vaccines have been imported by Pakistan from India in the last 16 months due to lack of manufacturing capacity in the country.

There is no point in having something which is out of reach of most people.its as good as not available

They need to continue to import the vaccine from India, save the drama-baazi for something else.

What we really need is new players in the domestic pharma industry. India is light years ahead in Pharma and we need to follow in their footsteps.

The increase in rabies cases worldwide is because of the huge number of stray dogs across the world. The solution is to be preventative rather than reactive. Eliminate stray dogs and there will be no stray dog bites / attacks.

The number of stray dogs in India alone is about 35 million, which is a significant percentage when compared to India's human population.

There is no point in having something which is out of reach of most people.its as good as not available

Which is why access to free medicine should be made a human right.
