We got more than just Su-27 fighters. When the Soviet Union broke apart, whatever Soviet hardware that were in the lands of the former Soviet states became possessions of said states and they needed hard cash to stay alive. They called US and asked if we wanted to go shopping. The C-5 Galaxy became our shopping cart. We got stuff from whole jet fighters, to whole tanks, to whole ICBMs, to missile consoles, to computers (primitive), and even uranium in both raw and processed forms.

But before this, we have always have access to Soviet hardware, even during the Cold War, thanks to former Soviet allies, such as Egypt. We studied the Soviet fighters, flew them whenever we could, and developed our Aggressor program based upon them.
