USA THREATENED SRI LANKA WITH SANCTIONS

The US had threatened Sri Lanka with costly sanctions if weapons deals were carried out with Iran & North Korea during the final stage of the war, a US wikileaks cable reveals, Norwegian newspaper reports.

According to the English Norwegian newspaper, “During the final stages of its war against the LTTE, Sri Lanka was reportedly in negotiations to buy rocket launchers and other military equipment from both Iran & North Korea. US officials threatened Sri Lanka with costly sanctions if the weapons deals were carried out. Any purchases would have been in violation of UN resolutions against trade with either country.”

The paper adds that the leaked cable states that “Sri Lankan officials denied they were in the process of illegal weapon purchases, but the US ambassador in Colombo wasn’t convinced. There was no comment on any deals with North Korea.”

Sri Lanka seeks fresh crude oil supplies & finance from Iran

Sri Lanka is seeking to renew its long-term crude oil supply contract with Iran and wrap up financing to expand its refinery during a visit this week by senior government officials to Iran.

Treasury Secretary P B Jayasundera and Ashantha de Mel, chairman of the state-oil refiner Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, are to hold talks with Iranian government and oil industry officials over the weekend.

De Mel told LBO that during his visit the CPC will renew its contract to buy crude oil from Iran, the Sri Lanka's main supplier of crude.

"We want to sign an agreement to buy crude for the next one year because the existing contract has expired and we need to re-sign it."

They will also discuss plans to double the capacity at the 50,000 barrels per day CPC refinery at Sapugaskanda, north of Colombo, which can now refine only about half the island's requirement.

Iran has promised to help modernise the refinery with funding and technical expertise.

The total project is expected to cost 1.2 billion dollars with Iran funding 80 percent of the cost and the CPC the balance.

Iranian experts have already begun a feasibility study on the project.

"We want to discuss the details of the refinery expansion with our Iranian counterparts," de Mel said. "We need to start the expansion as quickly as possible."

De Mel also said the CPC had just imported its third consignment of crude oil under an Iranian credit line.

The CPC had now bought 3.5 million barrels of crude under the credit line which gives the corporation seven months to pay, the first four months interest free and another three months at half a percent above the London inter-bank offered rate.

The CPC imports about a million barrels of crude a month.

Anyway now Sri Lanka’s main military related imports comes from China

China & Sri Lanka Agree to Deepen Military Ties

China & Sri Lanka today agreed to deepen their burgeoning defence ties as the powerful visiting Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa held a crucial meeting with a top Chinese military commander here.

The Chinese offer to enhance defence ties with Sri Lanka came during a key meeting between Defence Secretary Rajapaksa and Chen Bingde, the Chief of General Staff of Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

China was willing to work with Sri Lanka to further enhance friendly exchanges and cooperation between the two nations and armed forces, to promote their comprehensive and cooperative partnership, Chen said.

There has been continuous consolidation and development of China-Sri Lanka relations in recent years, state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua quoted Chen as saying today. He said Beijing appreciated Sri Lanka’s firm support on the issues of Taiwan and Tibet, which were related to China’s core interests.

Well why would Sri Lanka prefer to go as far as dealing with Iran, N.Korea, China and Pakistan despite Indian claims of close friendship?? Talks something about the direction of trust Lanka has !

I bet they did complete their deal with N.Korea whatever was it only that it must have been conducted under the "Made in China" label.
