US withdrawal great success for Iraq: Leader

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says the complete withdrawal of US forces from Iraq is an important incident and a great success achieved by Iraqis.


In a meeting with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in Tehran on Monday, the Leader said the rising authority of Iraq in the Arab world and the Middle East region is a cause for happiness for Iran.

“The complete withdrawal of American forces from Iraq is ...an important incident and a great success which was achieved through the resistance of the [Iraqi] government and by showing the collective and national will in Iraq,” the Leader added.

Ayatollah Khamenei enumerated holding the Arab League summit in Baghdad as another indication of Iraq’s authority.

“Certain sides made great efforts to show Iraq is not part of the Arab world but by hosting the Arab League summit in Baghdad, Iraq is now at the top of this league and the Iraqi prime minister is the head of the AL,” said the Leader.

The Leader said every country needs prerequisites and tools for its authority which mainly include scientific progress, development and serving the nation.

“The future for the Iraqi people is brighter than the present situation,” the Leader said.

The Iraqi premier, for his part, praised growing relations between Tehran and Baghdad in different fields. Maliki expressed hope his talks with senior Iranian officials would prepare the ground for closer cooperation.
