ISLAMABAD: US Ambassador Richard Olson on Monday assured Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan that his country would not leave alone Pakistan and Afghanistan after the Nato withdrawal from Afghanistan

Talking to the interior minister, Olson said the US shared Pakistan government’s vision for peace and had .genuine interests in the progress and well-being of Pakistan as articulated by Senator John Kerry himself.

Nisar said Pakistan had an important role to play in the post-2014 scenario and hoped that the US would watch out its interests concerning regional security.Meanwhile, Olson told Radio Pakistan that the US and international community had learnt the lesson from the period 1989 to 1992 and were determined not to repeat the mistakes.

“Our plan is to continue to engage with Pakistan and Afghanistan. If we are invited by the Afghans to have some residual force, it will require the signing of the Bilateral Security Agreement,” he added.

When asked to comment on the future situation in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of the US and Isaf forces, he said it was hard to predict.Regarding the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline field, he said the US position was very clear and added that such a pipeline would be “sanctionable”.
