I think this is good news for india. India will get benefit many things from this alliance status. Getting grade A Nato level status, India will get more options in defense industry without fear. Going in this umbrella, India has opened options in western countries as well .

To me it looks this is US counter attack to Indian purchase of Russian S-400 and helis. This must have been the reason given by American companies and diplomats as why should India be allowed to buy the latest and the greatest yanks have. To make US companies more competitive. US MIC wants their piece of Indian defence equipment market. Its a bad news for Indian indigenous development. ISRO was able to mature because there was no where to go.

BTW, US weapons no longer out class Russian or Chinese ones. They may be a shade better but having US weapons is not the deciding advantage as it was in cold war. And they are hell lot expensive to boot!

India is buying S-400 as well we are in final stages for signing the deal.

Actually they will get the chinese knock-off of S-400 when it comes in 2020 or so.

S-400 is a THAAD level of AD system whereas Chinese develop HQ-19 form HQ-9 similar to THAAD & S-400 @Shamsher1990
