Six-member crew arrives on PIA’s request to start non-stop flights to the US.

RAWALPINDI: A US aviation team on Tuesday visited the New Islamabad International Airport on the Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) request to start “non-stop flights” to the US.

The national flag carrier had stopped direct flights to New York via Manchester in the UK in October 2017 due to financial losses.
The six-member crew of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) – the US government agency that oversees airport and air carrier security – headed by Alexander Peter Poikayil reviewed security arrangements, baggage handling, cargo section, runway, kitchen and other departments of the airport.

After reaching the airport, the TSA team held a meeting with the Civil Aviation Authority and PIA officials. New International Islamabad Airport Manager Muhammad Adnan, Airport Security Force CSO and other officials were in attendance.

According to sources, the US team reached the airport at 9am and remained there till 4pm – a total of seven hours.

No imminent plans for direct flights to Pakistan, says US Embassy

For the visit, the team was divided into two groups – A and B, the sources said, adding that both the groups followed the standard operating procedure and after conducting a detailed review of all the facilities available at the airport for seven hours, they left.

Aviation Division officials said the purpose of the TSA team’s visit was to review the civil aviation structure for future cooperation as well as taking a decision on PIA’s request to start non-stop flights to the US.
“The TSA team came to Pakistan on PIA’s request. After the team’s visit and confirmation, the national flag carrier would start non-stop flights to the US.”

PIA spokesperson Abdullah Khan said, “The visit of the TSA team was made possible due to the efforts of Air Marshal Arshad Malik as well as the PIA administration.”

The spokesperson said that the TSA team would also visit Lahore and Karachi airports. “This is the first time that PIA is making arrangements to run non-stop flights to the US.”

Abdullah said passengers travelling to the US and their baggage would be screened according to international standards due to installation of the latest machinery at the airport.

ISLAMABAD:
The US Embassy has said there are no imminent plans for direct flights between the United States and Pakistan.

The diplomatic mission said in a statement on Tuesday that officials from the US Transport Security Administration will visit the New Islamabad International Airport next week to review Pakistan’s aviation security infrastructure.

The trip is part of the US mission’s “ongoing efforts to strengthen economic ties and air connectivity between the United States and Pakistan.”

However, “there are no imminent plans for direct flights between Pakistan and the United States”, it said. “The United States remains committed to partnering with Pakistan for a prosperous future.”

According to the statement, the TSA personnel will meet with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Pakistan International Airline (PIA) and the Aviation Division officials to identify international security standards.

“[The] TSA has been invited by PIA to conduct a formal assessment of security standards at Islamabad International Airport,” reads the statement.

TSA Attaché Daniel McQuaid said “secure international air travel is essential to facilitate trade and connections and fostering stronger bonds between the United States and Pakistan”.

“We look forward to continuing our relationship with the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority as we explore additional areas of cooperation and the possibility of capacity development,” he added.

It may be mentioned here that the national carrier discontinued direct flights to the United States in October 2017 due to rising operational costs and in a bid to cut losses.

the problem is of trust...

despite the PIA chairman's best intention in Pakistan we can bought off easily and they know it. .. so while they may install the best gadgets but the fact remains we remain as a country a institutional failure.

We cannot instill values in our people.

they stayed only for 7 hours... shows they didnt even want to a minute longer than needed.
