US threatens world order, not Russia: Analyst
US Defense Secretary Ashton Carters’ accusations and threats against Russia and China are dangerous moves that may lead to military confrontation, says an American author and political analyst.
“Carter is totally wrong and he has the real worldview totally backwards,” Michael Springmann told Press TV on Sunday. “He might accuse Russia of endangering the world order, but it is the Americans who have been doing this for decades.”
The Pentagon chief accused Moscow Saturday of threatening the world order by brandishing its nuclear arsenal; an act of “aggression” that the US military is preparing to counter.
Carter said Washington is adapting its contingency plans to deter Russia and help reduce the vulnerability of allies and partners.
He also expressed “deep” concerns about China’s growing influence and military power, alleging that Beijing’s activities in the South China Sea could trigger war in the Asia-Pacific region.
US officials “just spew this nonsense out and expect the world to believe it,” Springmann, the author of Visas for al-Qaeda: CIA Handouts that Rocked the World, said.
“He [Carter] talks about the principle new world order in this statement and it is more like world disorder,” he noted.
“He talks about the stewardship of the world order," said Springmann. "Where did the United States get elected by the people of the world to be a steward of a world order that most people in the world think is dangerous and outrageous and can lead to general war?”
US Navy warships have conducted two sail-bys within 12 nautical miles of Chinese territories in the South China Sea and are expected to carry out more such operations in the future.
“This is total craziness, but it is really designed to advance American interests as the Machiavellian view of disturbing the world order deliberately,” Springmann concluded. “The Americans will eventually pay the price sooner if not later.”
