On monday, the U.S. State Dept OKs sale of three E-2D Advanced Hawkeye Aircraft to France for $2 billion. France has requested to purchase three E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft. The aircraft is to replace France’s legacy E-2C Hawkeye fleet.

“The E-2D aircraft will continue and expand French naval aviation capabilities and maintain interoperability with U.S. naval forces,” the DSCA announcement read. “As a current E-2C operator, France will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment and support into its armed forces.”

To me, the most incredible feature about this aircraft is the folding wings. Yeah the technology of the radar and the whole AWACs capability is superb, of course. But we're used to that level of efficiency when it comes to that type of thing. But when you fold those rather large wings (the F/A-18 sections that fold are a bit smaller and lighter-looking) and you then witness these E-2Cs and these new E-2Ds not just takeoff off carriers, but especially landing on them with that nasty thud they all have to do to catch the wires and the strain and abuse that must put on the hinged portions of those wings and you never, ever see any failure in that particular aspect is truly remarkable. Hinging the wings and then locking them in has to be somewhat less strong than if it was a continuous, rigid form of construction and yet it works perfectly well. That, to me, is the more impressive part of the engineering aspect of these aircraft.

BTW, @Vergennes already opened a thread on these new E-2Ds for the French Navy.

LOL! It's truly amazingly remarkable their uncanny ability to copy and reverse engineer almost anything they want. Not just anyone can do that. It truly takes a lot of talent, ability and most of all, a lot of determination.

Yes, they wouldn't want to risk in ~2017 thinking out-of-the-box with a new design (like the US does all the time) if they know something the US figured out in 1964 works. Sort of like the Soyuz...

lol, I think it's pretty much understood all around the world that no one can touch the creative innovation capability the US possesses in nearly every possible and imaginable field. Even during the cold war, the Soviet Union tried with many examples to copy the US but they also had a lot of their own, creative design and execution elements that made them unique to Russia. The US just stands on its own and always will. No ifs, ands or buts about it!

Can't wait for the B-21 bomber unveiling to the public next year! First 'extremely low observable' class aircraft in existence.

I think we can expect the Hawkeye to be replaced like the Greyhound with a modified version of this
