US-SK Cancel Amphibious Landing Exercise

US-South Korea drill off due to bad weather
Seoul: Joint South Korean and US landing exercises on Mallipo beach were cancelled on Monday with military officials blaming bad weather for the cancellation.

In some cases, journalists were prevented from filming, and the full details behind the cancellation were unclear.

North Korea expressed renewed outrage over the Yellow Sea drills.

The war games are a "pretext for aggression and ignite a war at any cost," the National Peace Committee of Korea said in a statement carried on Sunday by the official Korean Central News

Barbed wire and metal staves ran the length of the beach for about two miles (3 kilometres). Military ships hovered in the distance. The aluminium road laid on Sunday to prepare for the amphibious landing drill was cleared away.

The joint military exercises will take place over four days, but no live-fire drills are planned, said Commander Jeff Davis, spokesman for the 7th Fleet in Japan.

How badly do adverse weather impact on amphibious landing operations?
i.e. more risk of boats breaching on rocks etc.

Does rough seas make hostile submarines detection more difficult?

It's probably because they were targeting a certain weather to conduct drills. For example, they would cancel a drill if they wanted to conduct a joint op in a storm, but the storm didn't come.

Unlikely. They'd not risk it looking like they backed down just because the weather report wasn't spot on. Half the game right now is posturing.

In the end, the US will only want to facedown weaklings.

The reports came as the United States and South Korea began joint military exercises in waters west of the Korean Peninsula in the face of opposition by China and threats of "consequences" from Pyongyang.

South Korea also ordered residents of an island shelled by North Korea last Tuesday to evacuate to shelters, according to witnesses.

"They ordered people here to move to shelters saying there is an emergency situation," the witness said, adding there were no details available.

The North's official KCNA news agency warned of retaliatory action if its territory is violated.

"We will deliver a brutal military blow on any provocation which violates our territorial waters," KCNA said.

Officials from South Korea's Defence Ministry and the joint chiefs said they could not comment on the Yonhap report. "It is impossible to confirm the report as it is classified as military secret," an official said.

The exercises, in waters far south of the disputed maritime boundary, are being held in the face of opposition by China and threats of "consequences" from North Korea.

Wang is probably an american spy. his assets should be checked for irregular income flow from overseas and the passport status of his relatives should also be checked. we need a secret police like the CIA or KGB that can do their jobs and hunt down corrupt officials and disappear them.

That's called an independent watchdog buddy. They don't exist in communist states, though you have the right to desire for one.

Since no one has said it yet, just some winks and nods, so they got scared of the Chinese/NK threat? Were they really going to be this pissed off with about the exercises. I understand that China didn't want anything disrupting its trade routes, which were already disrupted, so why this particular exercise was called off. As someone up there explained, backing off due to rain won't be done as obviously US/SK won't want the bad press and people calling them pussies.

What sort of amphibious landing was this? Omaha style or deploying heavy vehicles/gear?
