US Senate adopts bill opposed by Saudi Arabia
Legislation allowing families of 9/11 victims to sue kingdom for damages passed despite veto threat by White House.

The US Senate has passed legislation that would allow families of 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia's government for damages.

The development sets up a potential showdown with the White House which has threatened a veto.

The Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA) legislation passed unanimously on Tuesday.

It must next be taken up by the US House of Representatives where no vote has yet been scheduled.

Saudi Arabia denies involvement in the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon 15 years ago, threatening to sell the kingdom's $750bn worth of assets in the US if such legislation becomes law.

President Barack Obama has opposed the legislation.

Adel al-Jubeir, the Saudi foreign minister, has said his country's objection to the bill is based on principles of international relations.

"What [Congress is] doing is stripping the principle of sovereign immunities which would turn the world for international law into the law of the jungle," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Josh Earnest, White House spokesperson, said Obama continues to "strongly oppose" the Senate measure as eroding the principle of sovereign immunity and increasing the vulnerability of US interests in foreign courts.

"Given the concerns, it's difficult to imagine the president signing this legislation," Earnest said.

If passed, the legislation would narrow the sovereign immunity of other governments in federal courts, allowing lawsuits against foreign states for injuries, death and damages inside the US as a result of a tort, including an act of terrorism, committed anywhere by a foreign state or official.

"Victims and families who have lost loved ones in terror attacks deserve the opportunity to seek justice," John Cornyn, Texas senator and sponsor of the legislation, said.

'One step closer'
Charles Schumer, New York senator, said the US was "one step closer to justice for the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks" and urged the House to vote on the measure.

"In their pursuit of justice, 9/11 families were told American law prevented them from pursuing justice against those who funded the attacks," he said.

"JASTA will help these families seek justice and also serve as a deterrent to other nations who'd assist in terror attacks against Americans."

Fifteen of the 19 hijackers who carried out the attacks were Saudi citizens.

In a 2003 report, the US government's 9/11 Commission said there was no evidence Saudi Arabia had funded al-Qaeda.

Last year, a US judge dismissed claims against Saudi Arabia by families of victims who accused the country of providing material support to al-Qaeda.

US District Judge George Daniels in Manhattan, New York, said Saudi Arabia had sovereign immunity from damage claims by families of nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks, and from insurers that covered losses suffered by building owners and businesses.

For the SA monarchy the chickens have come home to roost. Let;s see what these royal idiots do now. Obama opposes the bill but overwhelming majority of the US public supports such a move by the US administration. Even if Obama vetoes the bill sooner or later it is going to be passed. It's just a matter of time.

. .
So why don't Afghans, Iraqis, and Vietnamese pass a bill to sue US govt for their damages ??
Only Vietnam can expect any result from this...because technically both the Afghans and Iraqis are on US side. the US lost Vietnam.

I am not talking about any sort of results they gain from that, but they should pass the bill with scorn.

America is going to get into so such trouble. The havoc it has caused around all over the world. Even a newborn baby will sue the USA for killing it's mother and Father. Hope America knows what it is doing?

Where are you going to sue the US government? Do you think the international court or the US courts are beyond their (the US administrations) reach? You still don't know the kind of world you live in! Nothing is going to happen to the US administrations as long as the UN exists and the UN is in the US pocket. What you should be asking is what is going to happen to the SA regime after the bill is ratified by both houses?

Do you think the SA regime has what it takes to defy the US? So, forget about the SA regime bringing back the oil money from the US banks. The assets will be frozen even before the SA has the time to blink. It's very easy to cut a deal with the devil but coming out of its clutches, now that's another story.

I think you don't know what's happening in the world around. Obama had his sleep cut out because of this absurdity by the senate and went straight to SA to calm them in not pulling out their assets in USA. For USA ignorance is not holding as a bliss anymore. World's politics is changing and so is the attitude of all the countries who once use to succumb to US pressure. Russia and China has changed the game plan. Likewise SA, Iran Turkey and even to some extent Pakistan is trying to loose US hold. The next decade will decide who will lead the world in term of policing.

Saudi Arabia should just settle this on this side. Pay the families and build the largest building in the world in New York.

you don't have to admit your guilt.

As the single super power of the world, it is the responsibility of the USA to solve the problems of the world's not to create new issues for the world, particularly for it's friends countries, USA increase enemy for itself and losing of friends otherwise the world is going to divide in two blocks once again.

What will Saudi Arabia's reaction to this now?

Remember they made the follow claims/threats earlier.
Saudis threaten to sell $750 billion US assets if Congress passes bill that would let 9/11 victims sue Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia threatened to sell up to $750 billion worth of US assets held by the Kingdom if Congress passes a bill that would allow the Saudi government to be sued over 9/11, reports The New York Times' Mark Mazzetti.

Saudi Foreign Minister, Adel al-Jubeir, personally passed on the message last month during a trip to Washington, according to The Times.

The foreign minister was referring to the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, (JASTA) which would let victims of 9/11 and other terrorist acts sue foreign sponsors of terrorism.

As Vice News noted when it was reintroduced in September, the Senate bill would pave the way for a lawsuit to proceed over Saudi Arabia's alleged role in the 9/11 terror attacks.

Saudi Arabia has been arguing that it's immune from liability over 9/11 under a 1976 law that makes it difficult to sue foreign countries in US courts. However, the JASTA legislation would allow victims of terrorism on US soil to sue foreign sponsors of terrorism.

The Obama administration has been lobbying Congress to block the bill's passage, administration officials and congressional aides from both parties told The Times. The administration argues that the legislation would put Americans at legal risk overseas.

Meanwhile, "the Saudi threats have been the subject of intense discussions in recent weeks between lawmakers and officials from the State Department and the Pentagon," writes Mazzetti. "The officials have warned senators of diplomatic and economic fallout from the legislation."

The Saudi government has routinely denied any involved in 9/11. Additionally, the 9/11 Commission found “no evidence that the Saudi government as an institution or senior Saudi officials individually funded the organization."

However, Mazzetti writes that suspicions about Saudi involvement have lingered because a 2002 inquiry from Congress cited evidence that Saudi officials living in the US were part of the 9/11 terror plot.

Notably, the Saudis' statement comes at time when US-Saudi relations are not as great as they once were following attempts to (kind of) patch things up with Iran, the Saudis' regional rival, and ongoing questions about the roles both countries should play in the Middle East.
