US rules out treaty alliance with India, says that era is over

o_O
Are u referring 1962???

I guess u want to leave 54 years back life. But like to remind you it's 2016.

It's all the same thing. The USA using their vassals against China and Russia, and sitting back while their vassals lose large chunks of territory in return for their loyalty to the USA. Ukraine happened in 2014, the Philippines in 2012, Vietnam lost the Paracel islands, India lost Aksai Chin.

. .
I thought India and US were one on China? So what's the problem? LEMOA is not an alliance in the formal sense, but allows militaries from both countries to use each other bases and facilities. This arrangement is mutually beneficial to both countries without the trouble of having a formal alliance.

India and US are on the same page only with respect to China. And even then there are major differences when stuff comes up on the ground. Like we are not interested in joint patrols, but they are. There will be so many other things we won't know about, like sharing intelligence or relations with other countries, like Japan may not treat us the same way as they treat the US. Similarly, Vietnam may end up being closer to India than the US.

LEMOA is a non-issue. This relationship existed before informally, now it is formal and more structured. Earlier both sides had to pay full cash, now we can barter and take credit also. It's like having a credit with your local kirana.

just swallow it.

They are ones swallowing.

No doubt US wants India to have a more formal role with them and their allies in dealing with China, but US also realizes India follows its own path, and has been since independence. Cooperation on intelligence will occur where there's mutual benefit. I think this arrangement is fine, for the time being.

Status quo works for us, but not for the US.

By saying we don't need to be signed treaty allies, the US is trying to signal to the Chinese that India and US are de facto allies. That reduces our room for diplomatic maneuvers.

We can't go into an anti-China mode without having solved the border issue first. And time's running out for China, where they have the upper advantage right now, since our military and economy will eventually catch up the more they wait. That will also make them impatient and unpredictable, so they will end up taking measures that will badly affect relations. For example, they may assist Pak more in their military buildup, or plug the Brahmaputra, stuff like that.

We have balanced our relationship with both the US and China very well, but the US is trying to upset the apple cart. Until we deal with Pak, we can't stand around antagonizing China, it's too premature. We want good relations with China anyway.

You see, if India and China go to war, the US won't interfere, but if the US goes to war, they will expect India to help out. Of course the stakes are higher in the latter because any India-China war will be a short border war with small gains on each side.

Very Good, pakistan is one good example why no treaty with USA is best thing to happen. Look at them, what decades of war has done to Pakistan.

This More Good India than US it means Nam is protected :enjoy::enjoy:

Every nation has its own interests. I like India's foreign policy. It never gets too close to any country. It maintains good relationship with both Russia and United States. Saudi Arabia and Iran. Israel and Palestine/Arab world. This is fantastic achievement

So they get to use Indian military bases (LEMOA), but they are not promising to help India after that? What a bad deal.

Not that mutual defence treaties mean anything to America anyway. China seized the Scarborough shoal from the Philippines in 2012, and America chose to abandon their mutual defence treaty, rather than sanctioning China for even $0.01.

That's how much their mutual defence treaty was worth, not even $0.01. Less then the piece of paper it is written on.

America does not have to fight for India. They can provide access to military technology

America abandoned the Philippines (and their mutual defence treaty) while they were losing territory to China in 2012.

Duterte became the President of the Philippines in 2016.

Four years later. It seems Duterte understands that America's mutual defence treaty was never worth anything to begin with, so might as well negotiate directly with China instead.
I like LEMOA. it is a dirt cheap way of keeping china & pakistan guessing

This is a very dirty move. The US is pressuring India to choose sides without giving India a choice in the matter even after India having rejected 'alliances'.

This article, if true, would mean the US is going to treat India as a treaty ally without having signed any documents. They are obviously trying to push India into a corner.

This is a very tricky situation for India.
What makes you think India is interested in one? Its american way of saying India dint ask for it. As for LEMOA its not worth the piece of paper it is signed on, bcos India will never allow stationing of troops and even for refuel or replenishment they need to ask our permission.

.
Who the hell wants a treaty alliance with USA ?

We won't be able to maintain our relations with Russia and Iran if we do that. Besides, relations with China will deteriorate. Not in India's interest at all. Good news.

Exactly why care, India wants relation with everyone. India can fight on its own and US will only provide technology for money, its pure business.

That's the problem. It's a clever way to corner us.

LEMOA doesn't allow stationing of troops in the first place. It's only a logistics agreement.
