US police have shot and killed a homeless man during an altercation in central Los Angeles, in an incident caught on video.

The graphic film shows a violent struggle between the man and several officers in the city's Skid Row area.

Police say that three officers opened fire after the man tried to grab a gun from an officer.

Witnesses said the dead man was known as Africa and had been homeless after treatment for mental illness.

The LA police department said officers had been responding to reports of a robbery and had attempted to use a Taser to subdue the suspect but he had "continued fighting and resisting"

It is unclear from the video what exactly happened, the BBC's Alastair Leithead reports from Los Angeles.

The video begins with what appears to be a black man swinging punches at four police officers in daylight, near the tents and cardboard of a pavement homeless camp. Two other officers run up to join their colleagues.

As the man is knocked to the ground, a woman can be seen picking up a fallen police baton and a voice seems to shout "Give me my stick! Give me my stick!"

Several police officers turn to tackle the woman, in the foreground of the video, and her detention partially obscures what is happening with the man on the ground.

A voice can be heard shouting "Drop the gun!" four times before five shots ring out.

The police officers step away from the suspect lying on the ground and nobody approaches the body again for one minute 13 seconds, by which time police reinforcements have arrived.

The man taking the video can be heard swearing as he records it.

After the shooting, he can be heard saying. "Ain't nobody got no [obscenity] gun. I'm gonna record this [obscenity]... They just shot that man right here, man, they just shot that [obscenity] man right here, yeah."

Though i was not really critical of US police on what happened before but this seemed really unnecessary.
However we can't accuse the police officers before the investigation is complete.

Maybe they hated him or something .Doesn't look like an accident .

Hmmmmm I have no idea how US police works and what are their SOPs, but with these regular incidents now making the media I think their trigger happy policy needs some revisit. There are lots of other ways where any unarmed suspect can be neutralized, but firing at chest is beyond me.

they say the victim took out a gun , its not clear in the video

i find the US police a little too aggressive , maybe they should have more anger management sessions for their cops so that they don't pull the trigger so often.

.
Well, US police are not known for their humility :P Rather they would like to be seen as Alpha Male.

yes agreed , but if the suspect is too close then i think that's a problem , because after getting shot on leg or hand he could very well shoot back.

Good agressive police work something pakistan need to learn from them. This is the reason crime rate are low in USA.

.
US police's threat perception threshold is set too low. Especially when they are dealing with colored people

Why go close to an armed suspect in the first place? Handling of different suspects should be (I think this must be the case) covered under different SOP.

I think they seriously lack negotiation skills or they are poor at convincing. Or may be it has got something to do with what they eat :p:

oh fuk muthafuka muthafuka mutha fuka... lol

what on earth was he trying to accomplish swinging wildly at 3 or 4 cops ? :woot:

having seen the video, it does look like the cops had managed to pin him to the ground, so there was really no need to use lethal force (unless they thought he was reaching for a gun)

saw a similar video some time ago but it was actually the guys fault for provoking the cops to take action.. he reached for his pocket when they told him to stick them up ..

check it out:

sad though, RIP crazy guy.. hopefully they'll do a fair investigation.

Oh lo, yar they should be trained to negotiate and convince, not every situation demands or require firing shots. How do you think cases involving hostages are handled?

.
The point here is if it was known that person was mentally sick why didn't they go with some non lethal method of getting him in control
Also the person was unarmed and that begs the question why 4-5 trained officials couldn't get him in control?
is there more to this story?

So many Mentally disturbed US are popping out now days.

why was he homeless in the first place?? usa establishment can declare someone as "psychologically troubled", put him forcibly into a psychiatric facility, and then throw him into the streets??

how is some mba in citibank hq on wall street not insane but angry black men are... how is usa military slaughtering hundreds of thousands not a threat to humanity but a homeless man with a stick is...

this episode is bloody sad... reminds me of this... ( Woman working 4 jobs to make ends meet dies while napping in car between shifts — RT USA ).

what usa needs is revival of the left-wing radical movements of the 60's and 70's, and supported by external agencies.
