US Marine Corps buying 80 F-35C fighter aircraft

The US Marine Corps is buying 80 F-35C joint strike fighter planes, the Pentagon said Monday, casting doubt on plans to buy a vertical-landing version still under development.

A short take-off, vertical landing model the F-35B destined for the Navy has run into "considerable" development difficulties and has been given two years by Defense Secretary Robert Gates to resolve the issues or risk the program being scrapped.

On Monday Chief of Naval Operations Gary Roughead and Commander of the Marine Corps General James Amos signed a protocol to buy 80 F-35C aircraft destined to equip aircraft carriers, the Marine Corps said in a statement.

The accord "incorporates a plan to provide five US Marince Corps squadrons of F-35C Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft to the Navy's carrier air wing," the statement said.

But it stressed "it is important to note that the continued development of F-35B remains the centerpiece" of the Corps's tactical fixed wing modernization program.

"The Marine Corps remains unequivocally committed to the success of the F-35B program," said spokesman Major Joseph Plenzler in the statement.

"Our hope was that we would be able to someday fly those versions off of naval aircraft carriers. In the meantime, it would seem prudent that we would buy some number of C variants (even early on) so that we can begin to transition our force," he said.

Plenzler said the US currently has 11 carriers and 11 large-deck amphibious ships, flying tactical fixed wing aircraft.

"A couple years from now, with F-35Cs on board 11 aircraft carriers and F-35Bs flying off of 11 large-deck amphibious ships, our nation would have, for the very first time, 22 capital ships with fifth-generation aircraft flying off of them," he added.

Guess they got rid of the B concept and to speed up induction decided to go with C. Good decision. They better hurry up because US has got 12 + nations waiting in line.

F-35C is nothing compared against the J-20. ^^

J-20? With surplus Russian engines, no vectoring or super-cruise? Um...yeah.

And with no American Flag on it.. and no slogan of "Freedom".. I wonder what Chinese are gona do with this J-20 $hit. I've heard it doesn't even fly and they pull it with invisible jets flying ahead of it. :disagree:

Wow, alot of anti J-20 fans here. I need reinforcements!!!!!!! >_<

About time.

This will give the US amphibious forces a boost in firepower as well as the element of surprise. Being VTOL, these would most likely operate off carriers in support or complement of the Super Hornets in an amphibious operation to offer quick and decisive air support while being invulnerable to enemy air defenses. This is also a "shock and awe" aircraft that will most likely be included in the first wave of aerial attack in such an operation.

Too bad they didn't roll out the F-35B in time. A VTOL capability would have greatly boosted this strike fighter's versatility by enabling it to be operated off San Antonios.

Anyways, nice to see that the fighter has achieved significant marketing progress. Things to note for are its powerful F135 engine, its AN/APG-81 low observability active phased array radar (this is able to jam the F-22's radar), its large load of weapons, and its powerful weapons systems. Now the USMC will have something comparable to the J-2X currently under development at CAC or the JH-7B under development at XAC.

The effort was worth it.

J-20 uses WS-10G engines and will use WS-15 engines (more powerful than the F-119), which will provide sufficient thrust for supercruise.

And yes, it has thrust vectoring.

 You mean China will one day have something similar to what USMC has now in the form of F-35 C. What is this J-2X or Jh-7B you speak of anyways, not another fantasy of fanboys I hope.
