NEW YORK: A homeless man in New York has been charged after throwing steaming hot coffee in a Muslim woman’s face.
Nathan Gary, 34, allegedly threw coffee on the 21 year-old’s face and called her a ‘terrorist’ at a Dunkin Donut’s branch in Midtown Manhattan.
“I gave him coffee and he said something to me about terrorists,” a Dunkin Donuts employee said. “He walked away from me and sat next to a group of Muslim women.”

“It was hot, hot coffee. She could have been burned! Then he swung his bag at her and it hit her in the face,” she added. According to NYPD, the woman tried to run away but Gary put her in a headlock.
Hate crimes in New York have sprung in recent months with NYPD officials vowing to swiftly prosecute suspects. “If anybody’s thinking in New York City about engaging in this type of behavior, just rest assured that you will be identified, arrested and charged accordingly,” Police Commissioner James O’Neill told reporters.
FBI statistics show hate crimes to have surged by 67 per cent – highest since 2001’s deadly attacks in the US.
New York woman attacked two Muslims, babies in apparent hate crime
Earlier in December, two Muslim women working for authorities in New York suffered similar assaults just 36 hours apart. A city transit employee was hospitalised with injuries to her knee and ankle after being pushed down at Grand Central Station. In another hate-crime episode, an off-duty Muslim police officer was harassed in Brooklyn with her 16-year-old son.
New York residents took to Twitter to condemn the attack.
