To be honest, i feel 90% of the reason for poor performance by military weapons, especially in developing countries is lack of proper training and lack of proficiency in using the military systems. Patriot defense systems in Saudi hands are equipped with PAC-2 class interceptors on average to neutralize incoming ballistic missiles from Yemen (and Iran), and they have absolutely delivered in this respect; 100+ kills since 2015 which is very impressive.

Patriot battery stationed in Mecca is equipped with PAC-3 class interceptors (M902 configuration ???), but this configuration is not confirmed for others.

However, all are/were pointed towards Yemen because KSA and Yemen are at war since 2015, and majority of attacks are expected from Yemen consequently.

Not surprisingly, Patriot battery stationed near Abqaiq oil field, was also pointed towards Yemen. Abqaiq oil field was therefore struck from a different direction:

Lets now make serious comparison of US and Russian SAMs.

* Both Patriot and S-300 weer deployed in 1980-es, both had track via missile semi active homing guidance.

* Both have capability vs. tactical ballistic missiles (up to 300 km).

S-300 are stationed on large vehicles. This gives them better tactical mobility, however it also makes them much heavier. S-300 can be transported only by huge Ruslan aicrafts, while Patriots can be trasported by medium transports.

What happened next? The biggest threat became ballistic missiles.

* US developed small PAC-3 missile for short range ballistic missiles (up to 1000 km). Russia developed similar missile for their S-400 only 10+ years later.
