US lifts military aid restrictions on Pakistan
WASHINGTON (AP) - The United States has lifted restrictions on military aid to Pakistan.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has notified Congress that Pakistan's recent election means the restrictions no longer apply. Her certification that Pakistan has returned to democratic rule effectively ends congressional checks on military aid mandated after the military coup by Gen. Pervez Musharraf in 1999.
The move will have no practical effect. Congress gave U.S. President George W. Bush authority to waive the restrictions in 2002 months after the Sept. 11 attacks. He has done so every year since.
Rice's determination was published by the administration Wednesday.
