US government reserves $ 64.39 million for promoting education in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD, Mar 6 (APP): United States has allocated an amount of $ 64.39 million in fiscal year 2005-06 to enhance literacy rate and promote the cause of education in Pakistan with special emphasis on female education.
This was stated by representative of American Embassy and Education Officer of U.S Agency for International Development (USAID) Thomas P. Crehan on Monday while addressing the launching ceremony of a three-month long course for teacher educators from government teachers training colleges and institutions.
The training programme of 65 teacher educators from four provinces, FATA and AJK in subjects of English, Science and Mathematics is arranged by Academy for Educational Development (AED) in collaboration with USAID.
Thomas said teachers are assets of a nation and are responsible to make its future prosperous.
He urged the course participants to take their profession honestly and seriously and take advantage of mutual interaction with their colleagues.
ââ¬ÅI hope you will avail this opportunity and will try to learn from each others experiences,ââ¬Â Thomas added.
He said the basic purpose of such courses is to ensure quality education in Pakistan and develop the teaching skills for better output.
Earlier, Country Representative AED Iqbal Jatoi said this in-country teacher training program will improve content knowledge, skills and teaching methods.
ââ¬ÅIt will prepare each teacher as a leader for change in his respective institution,ââ¬Â he hoped.
He said this training has technical cooperation and support from three partner universities - George Mason, Oregon and Montana - and four professors from these universities have worked closely with instructors and resource persons in designing and developing training courses, text and material.
Iqbal Jatoi stressed the need to meet all other needs of educational institutions to make them more effective besides understanding the importance of teacher training or teacher professional development.
Joint Education Advisor, Ministry of Education Dr. Fiaz hoped the course will inculcate modern teaching skills among teachers which they can share with their other colleagues with a view to promote objective teaching.
Rector National University of Modern Languages, Brig (Retd) Aziz Ahmed Khan said teaching is a responsible and demanding profession and hoped that result of this training will be demonstrated through improved teaching and training practices.
Program Specialist AED Ms. Aabira Sher Afgan on the occasion gave a presentation about functions and achievements of AED.
The training programme would be held at National Institute of Science and Technical Education (NISTE), National University of Modern Languages (NUML) and Federal Government College of Education (FGCE).
