US gave Iraq $1.5b for biological agents, says Saddam lawyer
AMMAN: Saddam Husseinââ¬â¢s lawyer Giovanni Di Stefano has revealed details of payments made by the United States to Iraq for the use of chemical and biological agents.
One such payment in the form of a bank guarantee was taken to Saddam Hussein by Donald Rumsfeld on December 20, 1983. ââ¬ÅIt was for these reasons that the US and the UK were absolutely certain that Saddam did have chemical weapons because they had financed such,ââ¬Â stated Di Stefano.
ââ¬ÅWhat is certain however, is that no such chemical weapons were found and that if Saddam Hussein faced a trial for ââ¬Ëwrongful conversion of loans granted for use other than that specifiedââ¬â¢, I would perhaps consider a plea bargain for him. As it was the reason that no chemical weapons were found was that contrary to the purpose of the $1.5 billion loan guarantee granted by the US to Iraq for the use of biological agents, Saddam did not acquire biological agents,ââ¬Â stated Di Stefano. Di Stefano said that the ââ¬ËAnfalââ¬â¢ trial was at risk because of the revelations.
