US firefighters shot dead in 'ambush' - Americas - Al Jazeera English

A convicted felon has shot dead two firefighters and wounded two others after luring them to a blaze that police said he had apparently set as a trap in a small town in New York state, officials said.

The 62-year-old shooter - who was found guilty of manslaughter and was jailed for 17 years for his grandmother's death in 1980 - then fatally shot himself in the head, said police in Webster, on the shores of Lake Ontario.

The incident - which comes as debate rages in the United States about gun control following the Newtown school massacre - happened shortly before 6:00am local time (11:00 GMT) on Monday in the suburb of Rochester.

"The responding firefighters, when they pulled up at the scene, were fired upon," Webster police chief Gerald Pickering told a press conference.

"Four of the firefighters were shot. Two are deceased, two were transported to area hospitals," he said.

Pickering said it appeared there was only one shooter, and that the suspect was found dead at the scene.

The two wounded firefighters were listed in guarded condition at a local hospital, according to the Democrat and Chronicle newspaper.

Monroe county sheriff Patrick O'Flynn said there was no longer any "active shooting" at the scene, where a security cordon was put up and 33 residents were evacuated. But firefighters were still battling to contain the blaze.

The incident in Webster comes 10 days after the shooting rampage at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, in which 20 children, aged six and seven, and six adults were killed.

The shooter, Adam Lanza, killed his mother at their home before heading to the school, where he eventually took his own life.

The Newtown shooting has revived debate in the US on the country's gun laws, which are far more lax than in most other developed nations.

Barack Obama, the US president, said he would support a new bill to ban assault rifles, and has put Vice President Joe Biden in charge of a panel looking at a wide range of other measures, from school security to mental health.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein has pledged to introduce a bill in January that would ban at least 100 military-style semi-automatic assault weapons, and would curb the transfer, importation and the possession of such arms.

The US has suffered an increase of gun violence over the last three decades, including 62 mass shooting incidents since 1982.

It appears that far more good people are dying by guns in America than bad people , yet most in america seem to be in favour of guns , as it a part of their "culture" . God bless them and Merry Christmas.

RIP.

The two incident share nothing in common aside from the fact that in both case, both victim are killed by firearms

The problem is, when there are firearms, there will be firearm related crime. Even when there are no firearms available to public, there will still be Firearms related crime.

There are always problem with this sort, with or without people ownership of firearms. This is nothing special to talk about.

RIP to the victim.

Please explain me why there are such few gun related crimes in most developed countries with strict gun control laws ? UK , Australia etc.

Simple, there are less people in the UK and in Australia, A LOT less.

If you count Crime per capita, US have the same gun crime rate than in Australia, maybe Australia have even more.

Last year in 2011, City of Sydney alone have 100 shooting (Only counted Discharging Firearm in Permises, not Firearms related robbery, murder or other firearms realted offence, city of sydney is a city of Australia with 4 millions people, give or takes. Australia, on the other hand have 22 millions people. While the Great Britain have only 63 millions inhibitant.

If you have lived in Australia you would not say firearms crime are low in Australia. Maybe 20 years ago, not now, not anymore

Seems like Americans are falling to criminals more often than to war.

Sick minded people.

I mean, how sick do you have to be? !

RIP to the poor lives.... Hope they find peace....

Hit by robberies, Indian-Americans in Atlanta pick up guns | NDTV.com
Washington: Indian Americans in a Georgian city are getting themselves trained in gun shooting as self-defence measures after the community in recent months experienced a spate of violent home invasions and robberies.

Indian Americans living in Roswell, a suburb of northern Atlanta, are being helped by the local police in receiving this gun training, which they believe would help protect themselves from robberies.

Well there is something special to talk about, why this sack of sh*t was only given a manslaughter charge after killing his grandmother with a hammer way back when, and then where he got his guns when he was not legally allowed them, if nothing else than to try to close off the black market as much as possible..

Real evil stuff here, all the crazies always come out around the christmas holidays.

That's why i say these two incident have nothing alike.

One is a professional criminal, which have a long range rap sheet. He intented to go out in a bang.
The other is a deranged individual, you just don't know why he snapped.

There are many way ADA would have gone for Manslaughter charge, either he is not in a sound mind (But not to a point which he declared insane) Or he just snapped, if the DA does not feel comfortable on murder charge for whatever reason, the ADA would have gone in straight with Manslaughter one instead. Any ADA want win rate more than Justice anyday.............

I agree he would have gotten the guns in black market. In the state of New York, even his wife cannot buy guns for herself when she is associated with a known criminal with substancial criminal record, at least not the 223 rifle.

There are one thing strange tho. Even with Sandy Hook and this, the victim is not nearly as much as the "You-Know-Who" in Norway. Yet nobody in norway (At least not that any people heard, i am sure someone is talked about it) crying over ban on Guns and Police item in Norway (Yes, you can buy police uniform in any market (Online or flea) in Norway, Sweden and Finland) None here cry about the gun law in norway, wasn't it strange?

There's something fishy here, all of the shooters involved in the recent shootings end up shooting themselves in the head as if they were programmed, or brainwashed to do so in order to avoid being captured and thus spilling the beans on their masters.

Anyhow, guys, get ready for the United Socialist States of America (U.S.S.A.), "comrade" Obama has only begun his four year plan with the disarmament of the population.

Shows how much you know about the gun laws. Norway has some of the strictest gun laws. None of the weapons used by Brewik were legal. He bought them all off of ebay(according to his own journal). Unlike NRA, none of the Norwegians cried for more guns after the incident.

Next up in NRA's solution, moving forward, every fireman,para-medic and other first responders should pack an assault rifle before going anywhere.
