ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday accused the United States of seeing his country as useful only in the context of the "mess" it is leaving behind in Afghanistan after 20 years of fighting.

Washington has been pressing Pakistan to use its influence over the Taliban to broker an elusive peace deal as negotiations between the insurgents and Afghan government have stalled, and violence in Afghanistan has escalated sharply.

"Pakistan is just considered only to be useful in the context of somehow settling this mess which has been left behind after 20 years of trying to find a military solution when there was not one," PM Imran told foreign journalists at his home in Islamabad.

The United States will pull out its military by Aug 31, 20 years after toppling the Taliban government in 2001. But, as the United States leaves, the Taliban today controls more territory than at any point since then.

Kabul and several Western governments allege Pakistan's support for the insurgent group allowed it to weather the war.

The charge of supporting the Taliban despite being a US ally has long been a sore point between Washington and Islamabad. Pakistan denies supporting the Taliban.

Imran Khan said Islamabad was not taking sides in Afghanistan.

"I think that the Americans have decided that India is their strategic partner now, and I think that's why there's a different way of treating Pakistan now," he said.

Pakistan and India are archrivals and share frosty ties and currently have minimal diplomatic relations.

A political settlement in Afghanistan was looking difficult under current conditions, PM Imran added.

He said he tried to persuade Taliban leaders when they were visiting Pakistan to reach a settlement.

"The condition is that as long as [President] Ashraf Ghani is there, we (Taliban) are not going to talk to the Afghan government," Khan said, quoting the Taliban leaders as telling him.

Peace talks between the Taliban, who view Ghani and his government as US puppets, and a team of Kabul-nominated Afghan negotiators started last September but have made no substantive progress.

Representatives of a number of countries, including the United States, are currently in the Qatari capital of Doha talking to both sides in a last-ditch push for a ceasefire.

US forces have continued to use air strikes to support Afghan forces against Taliban advances, but it remains unclear if such support will continue after Aug 31.

Premier Imran said Pakistan had "made it very clear" that it does not want any American military bases inside the country after US forces exit Afghanistan.

Good that our leader is saying this. In the past we had leaders who would everything to ingratiate themselves to the Americans including becoming subservient to Indian interest in the region.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa has said that misperceptions and scapegoating must be avoided to counter designs of Afghan peace spoilers, a statement issued by the military's media wing said.

The army chief said this while chairing a two-day-long 242nd Corps Commanders’ Conference (CCC) held at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi on Wednesday, a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.

The participants took a comprehensive review of the global, regional and domestic security environment.

The forum was given a detailed briefing on the evolving situation along the Pak-Afghan International Border, its implications on Pakistan’s internal security – particularly in the western zone as well as measures being taken to tackle emerging challenges.

“We have made every possible effort to facilitate the Afghan peace process leading towards a negotiated settlement with utmost sincerity and will continue to do so,” the army chief was cited by the military’s media wing as saying.

Reinforcing Pakistan’s vision for peace, connectivity and shared prosperity, he added: “Being a collective responsibility, all stakeholders have to play their part positively for enduring peace in Afghanistan which is pivotal for stability in the region.”

Ahem 1989?
For Pakistan's work they then got crippling restrictions courtesy of the Pressler amendment.
Thank you Pakistan, we're going and leaving you a little parting gift.

Hillery Clinton actually apologised to Pakistan when she worked under the obama administration and acknowledged Pakistan had been abandoned by the US in 1989 when the soviets withdrew. Pakistan begged the US to stay and help restore a functioning government in Afghanistan but the yanks dusted their hands and fled.

U mean to say he is not hypocrite ?
Yes, and that's stupid of him

We know what an angry US is capable and our economic dependence

A smart man would have used politically/diplomatically correct words

While at the same time working towards changing that dependance

You can't "fight" US, if you do you'll get a bloody nose and no one would be Thier to help us

Only viable option is get out of thier economic/millitary clout

And you're better served if you do it quietly rather than making noise and attracting undue attention
