Mass farming is not renumerative or will ever be for a long time to come. All governments have an inherent interest in keeping food prices low, so inflation remains under control. Basic food items will always be sold below their cost of production, the farmer therefore always looses. In India for instance onions have been priced at about 20 rupees a kilo for over 5 years now, its the same with many other crops. Farmers need direct cash subsidies, nothing else. Foreign market dynamics rarely affect farmers.
