Rajshahi: US Ambassador in Bangladesh Dan W Mozena on Sunday termed the recent incidents of killings and tortures in border areas regrettable, sad and tragic and hoped that the Indian government would move seriously against such acts.
In reply to a question, he also hoped that the Indian government would take action against the persons responsible for such incidents.
He was talking to journalists in front of Shiva temple at Puthia Royal Palace under Puthia upazila of Rajshahi on Sunday evening. Earlier, he visited different temples on the first day of his five-day tour of the countrys northern region.
Speaking about the relations between Bangladesh and India, the US ambassador said, My government strongly encourages good relation between Bangladesh and India because we think that will be good for the security and economic development of both the countries.
In response to another question on Bangladeshs politics, Dan Mozena said he has urged the leaders of all major parties to engage in a constructive dialogue sooner rather than later and try to find out a mechanism for holding a free, fair and participatory election.
Because it is democracy and the people of Bangladesh believe in democracy. The centre part of the democracy is having a fair, credible and participatory election. Bangladesh needs agreement how they hold the election, he added.
About his temple visit, Dan Mozena said the quality of art is amazing which reflects the rich cultural heritage of Bangladesh and Bangla.
On Monday, the US envoy will visit different frontiers in Chapainawabganj district.
