‘US elite benefit from drones’
The US targeted killings program, carried out by drones, enables Washington to continue the so-called war on terror as it creates more enemies around the world, a political commentator tells Press TV.
The use of drones “serves the ‘one percenters’,” in the United States as “new enemies will be created” as a result of drone casualties, Kim Petersen, co-editor of Dissident Voice told Press TV on Tuesday.
And this is what the ruling elite want as they “need to have enemies to continue the so-called war on terror,” he added.
“The US is leading the world using the (drone) technology, is leading the world and adhering to a system of international impunity where lawlessness will be the ultimate rule.”
He said the United States is creating a world where “collateral damage”-- a euphemism for civilian deaths--is becoming “a norm.”
“There is no executive accountability because Obama just finds ‘the kill list’ and they carry it out with no repercussions,” Petersen said.
Over the past several years, Washington has been launching drone attacks on several countries, including Pakistan, Afghanistan Somalia, and Yemen.
The aerial attacks, initiated by former US president, George W. Bush, have been escalated under US President Barack Obama's administration.
The United Nations says the US drone strikes in Pakistan and some other countries pose a growing challenge to the rule of international law. The UN and several human rights organizations have already identified the US as the world's number one user of "targeted killings."
