Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade case: Screenshot shows US officials misread info - Financial Express
A screenshot of the visa application submitted for Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade's maid Sangeeta Richard indicates US authorities apparently misinterpreted information regarding the wage to be paid to the domestic help.
The US State Department investigator from the Bureau of Diplomatic Security seemingly erred by considering Devyani Khobragade's salary of USD 4,500 as that of her maid Sangeeta Richard.
That this discrepancy led to the arrest of Devyani Khobragade on charges of visa fraud in New York on December 12, is evident from the page one of the temporary work visa application and the complaint filed by Bureau of Diplomatic Security, sources said.
The relevant page of the visa application form (DS-160) clearly mentions that the employer's salary is USD 4,500 and not that of the maid, according to an authentic screenshot provided by sources.
The last question on the page is regarding the monthly salary of the employer and the screenshot shows the answer was given as USD 4,500.
Based on the same information, however, the 11-page complaint filed by the agent of the Bureau of Diplomatic Security alleges that Devyani Khobragade promised to pay USD 4,500 to her maid.
The Visa Application stated that Witness-1 was to be paid USD 4,500 per month in US dollars," alleged Mark J Smith, Special Agent of the Bureau of Diplomatic Security.
It is this complaint which became the basis for the arrest warrant issued for Devyani Khobragade by a court in New York. A press release issued by the Southern District of New York too made the same claim. "The Visa Application stated that Witness-1 was to be paid USD 4,500 per month," it said. There was no immediate reaction from the State Department on the issue.

The maid should be brought back to india and do the needful for humiliating her mother country for the greed of settling in US...

The arrest of senior Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade has led to the uncovering of misuse of diplomatic facilities by the US Embassy here including the hosting of full-scale commercial facilities within its compound.
After the arrest and strip-search of Khobragade in New York, India decided to firmly deal with the US diplomats on a reciprocal basis and downgrade the privileges and benefits which were given to them on a non-reciprocal basis.
The US Embassy has since long hosted full-scale commercial facilities within its compound which include the sale and service establishment that are open not only to non-US diplomats from third countries but to non-diplomatic personnel as well.
"This is a misuse of diplomatic privilege that is not extended by the US to others in their country", sources said.
There is a view in the government that US diplomats at the Embassy in New Delhi and in their Consulates in other cities in India have always enjoyed a high degree of non-reciprocal privileges and facilitation.
These include tax-free treatment of their nationals working in the American Embassy school in New Delhi, extra privileges and immunities for their consulate officials at their Consulates in Calcutta, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad, approvals for extra staffing, including the deputation of short-term "extra staff" for deployment in the Embassy which are usually extended repeatedly and become regular one to two year postings effectively.
There was no immediate response from the US Embassy here in this regard.
