The White House could impose sanctions on India if the country fails to meet the US demand to cut oil imports from Iran. As the US is trying to deprive Tehran of its leading source of revenue, India continues to resist US pressure.

President Obama could be forced to bar access to the US banking system for any Indian bank processing oil payments through the Iranian Central Bank, anonymous US officials told Bloomberg.

India, one of the most important US allies in Asia, has rebelled against American pressure to cut oil imports. Washington, followed by the EU, imposed sanctions on Tehran in an attempt to force the Islamic republic to give up its nuclear program.

Last year India was the fourth largest buyer of Iranian oil behind China, the EU (being the second largest buyer collectively) and Japan. It purchases around 12 per cent of all its crude from IRI (a transaction that is worth around $12 billion each year) and it still hasn’t asked its refiners to stop purchasing crude.

“We abide scrupulously by UN authorized sanctions,” Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin told Bloomberg in a telephone interview. He added that the restrictions imposed by individual countries “have an impact on commercial interactions,” and “from a legal perspective there is nothing that binds us to follow them.”

The news on possible US sanctions against India come after the International Energy Agency released a report on Wednesday, saying India and South Korea have sharply increased oil purchases from Iran since January.

Earlier, India and China proposed Iran to switch from the dollar to gold in bilateral trade, since the US and EU have issued unilateral sanctions against the Iranian oil industry and financial institutions. The sanctions would ban any bank involved in the oil trade with Iran from dealing with American and European counterparts.

The EU embargo on Iranian oil will come into force on July 1. This makes some US officials believe President Obama may be compelled to impose penalties on India as early as June 28.

India imports nearly 80 per cent of its oil needs, and oil accounts for nearly a third of the country's imports. Its demand for oil remains high, making it hard for the country to diversify its suppliers.

However, data released last month showed India’s economic growth at its weakest in nearly three years. The slowdown could make the country reduce its oil imports. Moreover, the Indian economy has been severely hit by the rocketing oil prices. But at the moment New Delhi’s plans for oil imports remain unclear.

It’s not the first time India has experienced pressure from Washington over its economic alliance with Iran. It has been reported the country was forced to quit a joint pipeline project with Iran and Pakistan to transport gas from Iran. In 2010, India withdrew from negotiations, and the deal was signed between Pakistan and Iran only.

Pakistan also faces US pressure from the 2700 km long pipeline that will start transferring Iranian gas from 2014: the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned recently the deal could spur US sanctions.

The most peculiar thing is that the new US law targeting Iranian petroleum transactions doesn’t specify by what percentage a nation must reduce its Iranian oil imports to qualify for an exemption from sanctions. But given the level of trade between Iran and India, particularly where oil is concerned, New Delhi is a top priority target for Washington

India is finding out about friendship with America. Every country in our neighbourhood should tell America to get lost

Of course India's good at taking orders. Every neighboring country wants the U.S. out of that region.. except india

Please...we are looking out for our interests and they, theirs. In this case they collide and in "many others" they become mutual.

So no, we still are partners out there.

On topic, no problemo at most they can sanction the Union Bank of India which was a fat zero presence in international banking scenario.

Of course India's good at taking orders. Every neighboring country wants the U.S. out of that region.. except india

Well a modicum of common sense will say who is taking orders and who is treated as an equal partner.

I heard the NATO supplies are getting resumed...:coffee:

Why? Has Pakistan got bugged of being one for so many years? Anyways we do what is best for us and don't fall in to any kind of pressure.

Yep some of our leaders are bribed and they are bending over not the man on the street or on this forum. But in your case its you lot here and on your streets.

Don't you understand Pakistan's location is strategic. We have a border with Afghanistan etc. Our forefathers deprived you that privilege. Even though we don't like America they don't like us we still have a transactional nature relationship.

back to topic lets see what India does?? in the face of American friendly pressure. Try staying on topic and not bringing Pakistan in??

Pressure haha nothing new for India...you know the major difference between Pakistan and India is that we put our interest above American Interest....and you can check that tooo...few Examples
Nuclear Deal...
MMRCA
Syria
Palestine...how many countries did you have seen who balance their relationship with both Israel and Palestine....

Is this the reason Pakistan normalize relation with USA even after November incident ???

In 70s..? They brought them in the early fifties when they signed those treaties like CENTO, SEATO etc etc.

You know the three all pervasive "A"s in Pakistan right ?

Of course India's good at taking orders. Every neighboring country wants the U.S. out of that region.. except india

Replace " India " with "Pakistan" you will know reality ...
From 50s entire Pakistan is taking orders from USA from your each and every political leaders to all Army officers and chief ...
I heard there was drone strike day before yesterday .. I think so i was in Pakistan by USA .. irony... We never let US Army boots on our land .. and you have them in Pakistan since 70s....

India ruled by Ms Indira Gandhi did nuclear test in 1974 and US tried to impose sanctions on India but nothing happened to Indian economy. India was in great need of nuclear tests in 90s but Mr Rao of slave congress government couldn’t dare to do tests. but the time BJP came in 1998, the very first thing Mr Vajpayee did that he straight ordered nuclear tests and kicked a$$es of US/ West, what happened to Indian economy? India registered over 6% growth during next 1-2 years of sanctions? Hardly 0.25% to 0.5% of annual growth was compromised during those 1-2 years, as estimated. Didn’t Ms Indira Gandhi know that any nuclear test would break all the treaties with West, especially with canada that time making Indian energy need troubled? but she did nuclear tests to defend national interests in 1974, even if India had got all the nuclear energy bans from NSG since then, since 1974. :pop:

We will see many other things happenning in this slave congress government. First this US b@stards want to do military exercise in Rajasthan, :guns:, and at the same time they threaten India with sanctions. few months before, US tried to do publicity that its they who offered help to India in 1972 war, help against China. Its shame that none from the congress government could answer the US that it will be only Indians who will defend their nation, not the mouses of NATO who can’t defend themselves in their own different wars like in Afghan. Indian economy is not that much dependent on trade like China but its India who may be threatened like this but not China :hitwall:. During Cold War, Ms Indira Gandhi used to first kick a$$ of US and then she used to talk to them while her same congress government is now slave of US :sniper:

Isn't it funny that Pakistani said this

You guys never had USA in your land?? Wow, I guess there is no such thing as CIA offices, USA anti-terrorism offices in your country?

And the only US soldiers Pakistan had is gone, when Pakistan shut down Bagram Airbase. I don't know about India though.....

Mate actually the CIA somehow found out that India was planning to conduct a nuclear test and that is why PVNR did not do it..It had nothing to do with Congress politics. Infact it was he who reportedly told Vajpayee that.."I could not do it...you should do it" (sic).
