The United States on Friday expressed concern over arrests in Bangladesh under Digital Security Act.

‘We are concerned by reports of new arrests in Bangladesh under the Digital Security Act,’ the South and Central Asia wing of the Department of States of the USA said in a tweet on early Friday.

The US also called on the Bangladesh government to keep avenues open for individuals to exercise freedom of expression.

Expressing the need for upholding freedom of the press in Bangladesh, the US said press freedom is the foundation of democracy and can save lives in a pandemic.

Earlier, eight foreign ambassadors and missions in Bangladesh on Thursday stressed the need for upholding independence of the press and freedom of expression for disseminating facts-based information during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Ambassadors Earl Miller of the US, Charlotta Schlyter of Sweden, Sidsel Bleken of Norway, Winnie Estrup Petersen of Denmark, Harry Verweij of the Netherlands, British High Commissioner Robert Dickson, Head of European Union delegation Rensje Teerink made the statements in separate tweets.

The High Commission of Canada also made identical statement on Thursday.

The diplomats made the statements in the context of the arrest of several people by Bangladesh law enforcement agencies and filing cases against them under the Digital Security Act, an ambassador of a European country said.

. . .
Good. Then put sanctions on hasina.

They will not do it . The days has long gone when you can change Bangladesh govt by lobbying at Capitol Hill. And after all the world is recovering from the virus of democracy and freedom of speech . Trump is sort of dictator and people like him will come again and again !

So it's better if you guys become practical and think positively!

That was the point. Either put sanctions or no need for drama. Most countries now a days dont care much about what usa says.

Actually drama is ancient method . The world was never free of drama ! Without drama you can not stand on multiple boat at the same time . And standing on multiple boat at the same time is very useful ( not for common people though ).

@mmr , try to understand that before ww1 most of countries was not democratic . Democracy is a western hoax , a tool to divide and rule ! Democracy can never unite a nation , it break a nation instead . In the end common folks were never valuable for ruling class.

Instead of democracy, a highly-educated and benevolent dictator is what we need - a la Singapore's Lee Yuan Kew.

In a country like ours, where most voters are functionally illiterate (just like the rest of the subcontinent) and don't understand basic concepts of being a proper electorate, and votes can be bought in exchange for a few hundred takas or even a snack and a cup of tea, Democracy is pointless.

Western nations use this moral superiority stuff to hedge bets for better outcomes just in case - to use in future negotiations. These are great EU/US tactics to use against even 3rd world allies.

As our GDP levels go up in Asia, we need to pay back these narratives in the same coin.

Completely agree . And this dictatorship must be controlled by our armed forces as the our armed forces are full of guys who are well trained professionals , not with amateur educated persons who are doing job in civil administration. At least as long as most of our bureaucrats can not stop their hunger for black money ( like bribe of commission) ,military control from behind is mandatory . Besides , IMHO military control from behind is mandatory because these guys are professional countering foreign propaganda !

Exactly . besides it's not only Taka but it's ideology as well . Look at our chetona business and Islam business. Can you think that these people can be changed easily ? No that won't . If you gave the solid voting right , then they ( politicians ) will use them as tool to sit on power . Some will make pile of wealth by looting the same people , and other's will impose various odd restriction in society and will create various terrorist group in the name of religion .

On the other hand when AL or this kind is on power , Chetona business will be predominant , but at least later is controlled because it's leader have some mind and sympathy to people . And she is actually hungry for fame instead of wealth . So this combo is working well .

So benevolent dictatorship with military back up is the best thing and thankfully we have this . And you see I sometimes nakedly defend Hasina , this is the only reason that if we do not defend our benevolent dictator in an international forum , it send bad message to others , and it directly can affect our country , since Hasina is backed up by the state Bangladesh itself . So I consider Hasina as Bangladesh not because I consider her the perfect one , but I defend her because she is the head of our deep state , that is actually protecting our country from foreign intelligence agencies and their conspiracy .

Although you see I damn care our impotent ministers as they are nothing but sycophants of an empress!

Right . However their democracy is losing ground , as China is overtaking them day by day . So even as propaganda the value of western democracy should not be use as example .

Yes . And in order to continue our GDP growth , there is no alternative to continue such dictatorship . Also we need to pay taxes more . When taxes will be used for the development of people , when they will be more beneficial , only they will be interested to pay more tax . And for such less corrupted culture , democracy will never work I can bet .

Well let's see. I see some hopeful signs that Hasina is trying to clean up the goonda and cadre core of her administration (some Indian Sanghi bootlickers got kicked out like Tofael Ahmed, my apologies if I'm wrong, Chetona bozos and parrot-talkers are hopefully next).

The thing is - when your GDP gets up to a certain level, you cannot run your administration with semi-educated folks like Obaidul Quader and that Bus-conductor Union president guy. These are useful idiots in getting grassroots votes, and you can throw these people a bone once in a while (percentage of bridge contracts in case of Obaidul), but to RUN your administration to get FDI, focus on infra building and exports, you need solid technocrats, well-honed skilled business folks and educated folks.

In this respect, I am impressed by the likes of Mustafa Kamal (Finance Minister) and Nasrul Hamid (Energy Minister). These duo alone are responsible for the success of the majority of projects in the power and energy sectors. They were good picks in the current administration and they are focused on results.

People in these ministries can have vices, can have corruption issues, but they, above all - have to get $hit done. These two have not much lacking in that area. I don't know if you'll agree, but so far as I know by their narratives and public statements, I see that they demand and get results.

As our GDP goes up, we will need more quality folks like these and even more technocrats under the PM focused on results, not ideological sycophants or propagandists.

He was one of the reformist as well alongside Amir Hosen Amu . And all communist allies gone too . So basically most sanghi bootlickers are history now . Yes still there are some sycophants but they are changing tone when they found that empress is unhappy becasue of their India loving voices ! These nobs are actually no politician so no one care or even knew them before they became minister !

Do not mind the chetona guys , they will be neutralize overtime , Hasina even does not need to interfere. There some online activists ( mostly atheist or agnostic ) are playing well against chetona cult . I believe they are playing the anti hero role in the show off . And chetona guys are actually leftists . My suggestion is , reduce freedom of speech strictly chetona guys will die faster as chetona cult is media production , and as long as media will be well monitored , chetona cult will be gone . But the key is you must control the freedom of press in order to contrtol chetona cult . As once Jamati cult is now tamed , it's only because govt successfully neutralized jamati media like sangram , amar desh , nayadiganta and some more . Not to mention the inqilab as they are AL ally now as they are Qawmi !:P

And something again about democracy that I forgot to say in previous message. Few days ago you saw that when Hasina was cleaning Zuboleage then opposition guys were trolling and also trying to say that how clean was BNP and how bad is AL , because AL is soo corrupted that their leader is annoyed and cleaning her own house bla bla bla lol . It's another proof that the illiterate , half educated and pseudo educated folks do not deserve democracy , as if you do something positive , they will claim that you are afraid so doing so !

Agree . And also you do not need them to get vote nowadays . TBH I am a big supporter of election rigging , since no election was fair in Bangladesh. I even do not support any type of election nowadays as it only waste of our hard earning money . But unfortunately in order to please our western allies , we must have to waste the money ! However let's consider it as investment !:D

I hope as long as china will take the place of west and westerns will keep voting for trump , we can then make good use of the money ( that we waste on election in every 5 years ) . For now let them use these clowns to get vote. And About the bus contractor Shahjahan Khan , oh man , he always laugh when he needs to remain silent lol . Better not talk about the super clown !

Yes you are correct .

Indeed , and I believe Hasina knows it very well . However the sycophants are not utterly useless as they really have some good entertainment value . As whip Swapon called Hasina as Hazrat Sheikh hasina , and social media was burst in trolling ! Sometimes I feel that such things are good for people's health, I wish that these Gopal vars always stay in limelight , although only in less important position !:-)

Exercising complete freedom of expression is easier said than done. One country needs a totally educated and nationalistically united population to pull this off. I doubt even USA has that since Trump is President elect. Apart from the Scandinavian nations I don't think any other country can claim major press freedom in an unbiased environment. So for a country like Bangladesh propaganda based press is a must but only to ensure prosperity in my opinion.

However, freedom of speech is also needed. Otherwise we would now live in a world without Newton's laws, Einstein's relativity theory and the Big bang theory.....!!!!
