Key Points
  • The US Army has grounded domestically based combat helicopters following a string of fatal accidents
  • The four-day stand-down will allow the army to review flight-mission briefing processes, unit pre-accident plans, and aircraft maintenance procedures
The US Army on 3 December grounded helicopters at 11 installations following a string of fatal training accidents in recent weeks, US Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) announced.

"The decision to ground our aircraft today is taken with the utmost seriousness and my responsibility as the commander of US Army Forces Command," General Robert B Abrams said in a statement. The move "will permit army aviation leaders specific time to review army aviation training procedures and helicopter safety precautions to manage risk, and to avoid accidental loss of aviation personnel and equipment".

The loss of a Boeing AH-64D Apache attack helicopter out of Fort Hood, Texas, on 2 December was the army's third fatal crash in 10 days. On 23 November another US Army Apache crashed in South Korea, while a Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk went down at Fort Hood. The aircraft were all on training missions.

In addition to 10 army bases, the four-day grounding also includes Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state, FORSCOM spokesman Paul Boyce told IHS Jane's . The grounding does not affect overseas army installations, he added.

Gen Abrams has directed army aviation leaders within FORSCOM to review flight-mission briefing processes, unit pre-accident plans, and aircraft maintenance procedures. Further, unit-level investigations of the recent accidents are under way, according to FORSCOM.

US Army grounds helos after fatal crashes | IHS Jane's 360

They should learn from India 5 years 60 crashes but still moral high.:D

That figure,is it coming out from your backside???

on topic...

Actually USA faces majority of crashes due to their massive fleet and tough operations. But 3 crashes in 10 days is kind of "Excessive",But grounding the helo fleet is perfectly normal. It happens times and again.

Nah,they should rather learn from Pakistan who have managed to crash more MI-17 in the last couple of years than India has done in the last 2 decades but still flying those MI-17s with great courage:lol:.Btw,there's a new joke out in the town,if someone wants to kill a high ranking diplomat of a particular country just send him/her to Pakistan and the Pakistani Armed forces will do it for free by crashing them in their own choppers:rofl::rofl:!!

Our MI-17 are in combat and fly more hours then prob entire IAF chopper fleet cuz they are grounded half the time.

wrong.. :astagh:

only 1 Mi-17s crashed due to mechanical failure even though India is using Mi-8/17 for a long time and in 300+ in number. And India never faced any reason to ground Mi-17 fleet.

Meanwhile,Pakistan, which is flying 45 "Donated by USA" new and second hand helos, already crashed 2 in quick succession.

or rather BS=Maarkhor??

Like I said, PA MI fly 10 times more then entire IAF helicopter fleet... If IAF starts flying half the amount of hours PA flys, IAF would crash half of their fleet in a year.
