US apologises over 'mistreatment' of Pakistani military delegation

The Pakistan defence ministry has said that the United States has apologised for the misbehaviour of Dulles Airport officials with the Pakistani military delegation and has assured of taking necessary measures to avoid such untoward incidents in future.

The Pakistan defence ministry released a statement saying that US Under Secretary of State for Defense, Michelle Flournoy, called up Pakistan's Defence Secretary Syed Athar Ali, and "apologised over the mistreatment meted out to Pakistani military delegation", the Dawn reports.

"Syed Athar Ali expressed serious concern over the incident and emphasised the need for an institutionalised mechanism where such like incidents are averted."

"Ms. Flournoy assured secretary defence that all necessary measures will be institutionalised after mutual consultations to avoid recurrence of any untoward incident in future," the statement said further.

The nine-member Pakistani military delegation was deboarded from a plane at Dulles airport, Washington. Although the delegates disclosed their identities and showed relevant documents, they were reportedly detained and interrogated for over two hours. When they were released, they had already missed their flight to Tampa, Florida.

The US Department of Defense issued an apology, but the delegates had by that time received directions from Pakistan to cancel the meeting.

They must be...........just imagine if the same thing happened in Pakistan with US delegation what west media will do...........just imagine.

Pakistan army should buy an executive jet that can be used by the senior army officers rather than using the regular airlines with so many connections/plane changes.

Pakistan Army already has one but it is too small and is used by Army Chief for domestic travel but i think for such a huge delegation (Senior Officers from all three Services) Pakistan Army should just pick one from PIA which is not busy and pay for fuel and go to their destination.

Wasnt there some issues with the passports of some US officials some months back. ?

That was VISA's issued not Passports. Lets not derail the topic. US officials coming into Pakistan have their luggage sent via diplomatic channel = no search no questions.

Such things happens.....They apologise...Good.

The incident itself might be not as big as the media described it to be. Remember British Prince used racist words. When the media asked the Pakistani captian that Whats his opinion he said i didn't even notice that. I think we should promote more of the good work done between two countries instead of having long debates on such issues.

Move on....

If pakistan army flies its on executive jet it will be considered an offical visit and will require landing at air force bases. And no to forget requiring millitary over flight cleanrance over sevral countries. It easy to travel as civlians in civilian airliner.

No offense,

There are people in american who don't like Pakistanis or some individual , so you cant expect every american to like pakistan or it's army.

^^One can easily find equal number of Pakistanis in Pakistan who may not like Americans or their army on our soil but this doesn't mean Pakistanis should take matter in their hand and mistreat them for their identity?

Patriot: I would not recommend any important Pak army officer flying beyond international borders on private jet.
Neither should Pak army officers travel together on national or international flights.
Remember what happend to the lot of Egyptian F-16 pilots on their way back home from US? Flying together is a folly in it self!

I failed to understand why army officers were not granted diplomatic status?

Point remains.... did some one apologized the officers of said delegation? or it was limited to the corrupt regime and their appointees. considering the fact that US did not trusted the same corrupt govt. for flood relief goods.

I think what the Americans did was right, assuming the words uttered were to the effect "I hope this is my last flight".

If Pakistan or any other country does not do the same to US officials it is their stupidity, for the lack of better word".

Let me give an example here.
After 9/11 when US started racial profiling, well collecting finger prints, they excluded it for most west European countries, Japan, Australia etc. I hated it. But only Brazil had the guts to implement the finger printing of American travelers. They fingerprinted no one else. Now that is what I call guts. I wish India had done something similar.

I am not against finger printing but doing it on a selective basis is profiling.

Anoop

To treat the members of a military delegation of a vitally important allied nation in such a cavalier manner is the height of irresponsibility and an insult to Pakistan armed forces....apparently the apologies were accepted but they should have retaliated in kind.....after all many American defense officials routenely visit the Pak-Afghan border....

Good to see the US did the decent thing and came out with this apology. This was no way to treat officers of the armed forces of a soverign country, that too a country that is your ally.

Heck, even though adversaries may hate their opposite numbers in the armed forces, but the true soldiers will always respect their adversaries for what they are.
