US and UK to improve situation in Pak-Afghan region: Hillary Clinton
WASHINGTON: The United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK) are working to address the situation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region and forge a positive relationship, said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday.
We are going to be working closely together in the weeks and months ahead along with our other NATO allies to enhance our support for the people of Afghanistan, she said after meeting with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband.
We are also working together on Pakistan. And as you know, President (Barack Obama) and I have appointed a special representative to that region because we see those two countries as linked together. And we want to forge a positive relationship and we know that the UK shares that approach, she said.
She applauded Britains efforts in Afghanistan, where the US-led international forces were trying to deal with a growing Taliban insurgency that had spread to many parts of the country over the last two years.
Miliband, the first top diplomat of a country to meet Clinton, said they talked also about Afghanistan and Pakistan and the new approach that the allies and Ambassador Richard Holbrooke (special envoy) want to bring to that domain.
The two diplomats also vowed to make concerted efforts on a broad range of international issues, including the Middle East conflict, environment and economic matters. app
