The US Air Force has proposed Arizona, Florida, Utah and Vermont as the preferred alternatives for operational and training bases for F-35 joint strike fighter (JSF) aircraft.
Hill Air Force Base in Utah and the Burlington Air Guard Station in Vermont will perform operational missions, while Luke Air Force Base in Arizona will carry out training on F-35 jets.
Eglin Air Force Base in Florida will be home to 59 F-35 jets.
The US Department of Defense has said that the current scope of this basing action will include 250 to 300 F-35 aircraft.
Deputy assistant secretary for installations Kathleen Ferguson said this was not a final basing decision.
"The preferred alternatives, with other reasonable alternatives, will continue to be evaluated in the environmental impact analysis process," she said.
The USAF will use the next-generation F-35 fighters for air-to-ground role to replace aging F-16 and A-10 aircraft and to support F-22.
