Unrestrained increasing missile defense harms int'l security: SCO heads of state
BEIJING, June 7 (Xinhua) -- The heads of state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) uphold that the strengthening of missile defense by a country or group of countries in a unilateral and unrestrained manner in disregard of the legitimate interests of other countries will cause harm to international security and global strategic stability.

The leaders expressed the agreement in a press communique released here Thursday after the SCO summit in Beijing.

The communique said the relevant issue "must be addressed by all countries concerned through political and diplomatic efforts."

The two-day summit groups Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Chinese President Hu Jintao, Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambayev, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tajikistan's President Emomalii Rahmon and Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov.

Every nation has right to defend itself against any missile threat. In situation of war, the opponent will use any weapon to win. To defend against missile, ABM technology will be pursued. International security doesn't come first than national security...which is a popular belief.

Why would we be afraid.....Russia and China have missile defense and they are dictating others to not pursue this. But India doesn't care about it, we will continue working on our ABM shield as recent tests have been successful....So we have protection...will China & Russia give the same to Pakistan or any other country, that's the question.

I think the statements was aimed at US's Missile defence shield which violates the ABM treaty signed by Moscow and Washington. I guess the treaties signed b/w them restrict the range of ABM systems as well as of cruise missiles along with other stuff.

It all started when the US placed Nuclear Tipped Missiles in Europe and Russia decided to do the same in Cuba, read up on Cuban Missile Crisis. The US & Russian Governments came to an understanding and signed various treaties to ally the fears of the other and to minimize the risk of starting a Nuclear war by accident.
