Thanks for the info. There is an institution in Lahore (can't remember the name right now) that is doing some great work to preserve the arts just as there is a well known lawyer/music lover who has single-handedly worked to preserve performing arts. There is a revival of sorts post Zia, but is it good enough? For instance do the taqiyas of music in Lahore still exist and flourish? Otherwise it will be another case of what happened to Roshanara Begum who went silent, till the APMC motivated her to sing again in public. I'm not sure if the arts are completely out of the woods yet, seeing some resurgence in fundamentalist thinking that surfaces periodically.
Forgive me for sounding a little pessimistic. But I do hope for better times.

The taqiyas are as good as dead, not for the lack of talent, but due to the cold shoulder of the government and the lack of a proper platform to express themselves, they are pretty much languishing in poverty. I recently saw a news report on some Balochi singer, a recipient of various awards which he was trying to sell, just to make some money to survive. That unfortunately is the state of most artists in today's Pakistan. The turbulent times aren't helping either but then again Pakistan is home to a resilient nation, i'm hopeful that once things get back on track, the art too will flourish like it used to before the radicalization. The institute you speak of is probably NCA and yes they have done some commendable work to preserve whats left of the culture of Pakistan and as for the lawyer/ music lover, i think you are referring to Yousuf Salahuddin who indeed has played a pivotal role in a restoration of former glories but he's just one man. i remember going to a bassant party of his back in '05, needless to say the man knows how to throw a party. The key to restoration is peace as art rarely flourishes in turmoil. I'm hoping against hope that that comes to pass.
