ULFA chief gets bail

Guwahati, Dec 30 (bdnews24.com) — Arabinda Rajkhowa, chief of Indian separatist group United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), has been released on bail.

A special court dealing with cases filed under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act in Guwahati, granted the bail on Thursday, ostensibly to facilitate peace talks between ULFA and Indian authorities.

Earlier, the State government of Assam declared in the court that it had no objection if bail is granted to Rajkhowa.

Rajkhowa was allegedly detained with his family by Bangladesh authorities in Dhaka on November 30 last year.

Indian media, quoting intelligence sources, had originally reported on December 2 that they were picked up in Bangladesh. They also reported that the ULFA leader had later been handed over to India.

ULFA protested such actions as Bangladesh and India do not have any extradition treaty between them.

However, Indias' Border Security Force claimed that the ULFA chief was arrested near the India-Bangladesh border at Dawki in the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya along with his wife and their two children.

His personal bodyguard Raja Bora, the deputy commander-in-chief of the ULFA's military wing Raju Barua and others were also detained, said BSF.

Later they were handed over to the Assam police, said the Indian border force.

New Delhi later announced Rajkhowa was arrested in Meghalaya, while Bangladesh home minister Sahara Khatun categorically denied that Rajkhowa was detained in Bangladesh territory.

Previously, ULFA political advisor Bhimakanta Buragohain, vice-chairman Pradip Gogoi, publicity secretary Mithinga Daimary, cultural secretary, Pranati Deka and deputy military chief (after Paresh Barua) were released on bail.
