Ukraine has suspended a joint venture with Saudi Arabia to produce the An-132 military transport aircraft.

President of Ukraine Antonov State Company, Alexander Donets, which manufactures the aircraft, announced on Friday that the company will continue to build the vehicles but with a new partner.

“In the framework of this project, an An-32D was built and tests began, but for reasons not related to the Antonov company, this process has stopped. There have been changes in the project partners in Saudi Arabia,” Donets said.

In February 2016, Saudi Arabia signed agreements with a number of companies including Ukraine’s Antonov to establish five organisation specialised in the transfer and localisation of advanced technologies in the fields of military and civilian aircrafts, satellites, radars and clean energy.

King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) and the Antonov company planned a joint venture to build a total of 80 aircrafts, some of them in Ukraine, and the others in Saudi Arabia.

The Antonov An-132 is an advanced version of the An-32 cargo plane.

In December 2016, the first model of An-132 flew over Ukraine in the presence of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Saudi representatives.

Observers believe the suspension of the joint venture is a result of the Kingdom’s rapprochement with Russia.

perhaps the newly elected president is the cause? i guess so

I don't think it can replace other country with handsome cash deals like Saudi Arabia. Even U.S.A can't afford to ignore K.S.A even after high public pressure.

No surprises there. This is how you compromise a country completely. The new president shows loyalty to Israel first, rather than his host country Ukraine. What a bad idea putting him into power will turn out to be. Can you imagine what could happen if Bernie Sanders became president of US? The US nuclear launch codes would reach Israel within minutes of being updated.

why they need ukraine? what defence indusry they have?

Hahaha! big title for nothing really.. The project is suspended between Antonov company and KAUST who did the transfer of technology, because it will be handed to Saudi SAMI for serial manufacturing.. So in fact it is continuing on a higher level..

The article says, it but most people do not understand:

Ask the guy who recruited you out of university since your unit supervisor wouldn't have much answers. After working for so long, you'd think they would've promoted you to lead by now.

an unexpected news .... anyways it is a decent light transport aircraft with a price tag of 30 million $ each....

The AN-132 can already be considered a success.. Saudi Arabia alone needs at least a 100 planes.. it has also confirmed orders from other countries.. the plant is under construction on phases..to be ready by 2020, but not only that, all the advanced equipment for making the composite body were bought, delivered and installed..So as a project defined in time.. it is going according to schedule..

Could the AN-132 be modified to a passenger plane?

Have you not heard of Antonov? Antonov was an aircraft company during the Soviet era and is Ukrainian company now that manufactures transport, and passenger aircraft. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonov

I know the way you are thinking, you want Israel and other Arab countries to cooperate somehow but that's next to impossible today. The various wars, and Israeli-Palestinian conflict has made a divide that is honestly too big to fix.
