For those wishing to write or have an amateur radio licence, you may be interested in uBITX 3-30Mhz transceiver with dual vfo/arduino controller/10w-2w ssb/cw. Ordered it already and will have it ready once it arrives.

Farhan has done a superb job in this initiative first with BITX series and now a full blown transceiver. Note that a collective of low income women are assisting in this venture and purchases are supporting them.

Only thing you have to supply is the chassis and knobs; if you are already electrically savy it will be easy. But remember you must have a ham radio licence to operate it; you may want to inquire at your local amateur radio society similar to here SARL on how to go about obtaining the licence.

Here you have to write a 3 hr exam - electrical/rf/operating procedure/legal. Before CW was mandatory for hf but no longer. We have Advanced/Novice grades e.g. ZS/ZU classes, I dont know about Pak where AP2 callsign prevails - it has been many years since I worked an AP station; VU2 is India.

For 109$ shipped; this is probably the best ever kit I have encountered and I have been licenced for 30yrs now.

For personal use I have a Baofeng UV5R

Yes, I know uv5r. It is so so. Lacks selectivity and sensitivity; if you want good Chinese ht, then you need to get Quansheng UV-R50- same price ; i got it for 29$ shipped. I use it dual mounted with Baofeng UV-82. I found UV-82 better in terms of functionality in the Baofeng family with dual PTT.

UV82---> Satellite Uplink --> QS UV-R50 for downlink; they are strapped to dual band home brew yagi.

I assume you are not licenced ham but using vhf/uhf for local use?

http://www.hfsignals.com/index.php/bitx40/

This is Farhan's 40m only model but many have converted it to 20m model and increase power to 20w as well.

I have made softrock ensemble rx/tx software defined radio; amazing but I found i could not lug a laptop around for portable use; hence ubitx fits the bill perfectly. My idea is to first make a mini hf manpack out of it and try to include a small coil based ATU with it to work on long wire.

I have an amateur wireless SWL license from PTA. I really need a license for the activities I use it for. For work we use BGAN and INMARSAT.

That sounds excellent. I might have a play around.

Noted that is commercial, i use SO-50 satellite for comms with other amateur radio operators. There are many other amateur satellites up in the sky. Long ago when MIR was up, managed a few qsos with cosmonauts then with shuttle a few times as well.

You need licence for SWL? Not here, it used to be long ago but people find it easier just to write licence. We had a great group out of our forward base where exams were conducted. Again, it is very straightforward but i dont know in your country; in UK just have to write the RSGB amateur radio certificate exam.

If you get hooked on hf, you will never go back. I have 2 sets of full size rhombic on hf facing towards north/south america on the side lobes and second which gives me coverage towards asia/australia. However, you dont need these large arrays; just a basic hf quarterwave vertical will get you up and running.

Just a google check:

Not very clear on what the exam covers though in your case.

Interesting India still is retaining cw requirements which is good. I still believe it serves a very valuable skill.

PTA is very strict you need a licence for any device that can Rx/Tx on airwaves in Pakistan. Failure to produce one can result in heavy fines and or jail time. I am already a member of PAKHAMS. You need to be a member of PAKHAMS to obtain an amateur license in Pakistan!

Here is the basic syllabus for your information :)

Noted, you need to be very strict with rf.

Interestingly, the sylabus is similar to what we classify as Novice grade; Advanced grade syllabus is more detailed e.g. colpit, super het circuit, measurements etc. Noone is exempt from writing the exam here e.g. if you look at last para. I still had write mine despite being in signals and a degree.

Every country has their own rules I guess but in general common wealth follow RSGB standards - PTA is slightly different.

Do you have a large 2m/70cm repeater network with D-star and or analogue?

I checked my log book - it was AP2HA which was my last qso.

A network of 2-metre repeater, AP2AUM (ASAD) is the goto guy, his wealth of knowledge is amazing.

had an eye op and recovering from small detached retina.

Try to avoid the use of display screen equipment in that case. My brother suffered from the same, doc's told him to avoid computer screens and TV until full recovery. Hope you get well soon!

Alright 007 - why do you need a walkie talkie?
It's not a walkie talkie ;). I work in an industry where we travel to the arse end of Pakistan with no GSM coverage so we use Sat phones and radios.

And I am licensed :)
