Drivers who work for online ride-hailing applications went on strike on Wednesday in at least 10 cities across the US. Gathered at the Uber Headquarters, scores of drivers expressed their frustration over low wages and benefits. Uber has already been through a number scandals and court cases, and this latest move comes a day before its shares begin trading on the stock market.

Uber driver days in the US are numbered..this protest is futile in the long run.

There's a logistical challenge of having 1000s of cars. Uber and lyft will have to maintain, insure, tax, clean cars. Currently the owner of vehicle does that.

Importantly who will refuel vehicle. In the UK all stations are self service, I expect usa be same. Does the vehicle have to return to main base to refuel? That will be expensive, if car has done a drop off 50 miles away and has to return to base.

some company will solve the problem. The question is why would the company license the technology to Uber/Lyft
that company could enter the ride sharing business

There’s already people who clean thousands of public buses and subway cars every night. They can do the same for a fleet of cars. I would expect the inside of these cars will eventually be transformed into something similar to make it easier.

Given resources building logistics to maintain and to clean thousands of cars is a trivial task

Buses and subways day is easy to predict. A bus will work for 12 hours on a fixed route and end of the night goes into a depot. Taxis don't have a fixed route, customers can order anywhere and go anywhere. You cannot predict what a taxi will do in terms of milage.

I’m pretty sure the taxi fleet has been dealing with this for decades. You get the drunken party people throwing up in taxis every Friday and Saturday night. I doubt the drivers are cleaning it up. They have some service that cleans them.

I remember the days of the Brown Boston Cabs with the vinyl seats and rubber mat floors. I’m sure it’s so they could hose them down.

I am not knocking self driving cars. I don't believe uber and lyft can pull it off. Taxi business is very difficult. Uber and lyft will have to have huge number of cars to satisfy customers expectations.

In regards to your post. Good drivers will check if car is dirty in between pick ups. Most cleaning is done by drivers. I expect uber will pay companies in every city to maintain their cars. Very expensive plan.

Lastlyt hey don't have any properity software, hence other companies like tesla can make a taxi service.
