U.S. warship at Mumbai port

Special Correspondent

MUMBAI: The U.S. Navy's amphibious ship, USS Dubuque has arrived in Mumbai on a goodwill visit.

The warship is of special interest to the naval personnel here for it belongs to the Austin class, the same as the USS Trenton that India has purchased from the US and is expected to join the Indian Navy in its new avatar, INS Jalashwa next May.

Displacing 16,900 tonnes, the 596-feet long amphibious ships of the Austin class are capable of carrying 900 fully armed troops for beach assaults. The USS Dubuque and the INS Jalashwa can carry six helicopters and four landing craft for reaching advance parties of troops for establishing a beachhead and facilitating landing of the main body.

USS Dubuque, commissioned in 1967, is capable of providing extensive command and control and communication support to the task force and the landing force commanders. She could function as the primary command ship for sending different landing craft to the coast and also vectoring them.

Captain William C. Hamilton is the commanding officer of the Dubuque.
