KABUL, Afghanistan Two visiting American senators said Friday that Pakistan needs to do more to stem the infiltration of insurgents into Afghanistan, as an attack by two suicide bombers in the country's east left one policemen dead and 17 people wounded.

Sen. Jack Reed, a Democrat from Rhode Island, said during a visit to Afghanistan that Pakistan needs to make a "much more aggressive effort to control the borders and to prevent any suggestion that Taliban elements can freely associate and organize themselves within Pakistan."

Afghan and some Western officials have repeatedly accused Pakistan of insincere efforts to block the insurgent flow into Afghanistan. Pakistan rejects the charge and says it does all it can.

Pakistan's government signed a deal with pro-Taliban militants on Sept. 5 to end fighting that broke out in North Waziristan after the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001. Under the deal, militants agreed to not carry out violent acts or send fighters into Afghanistan.

But U.S. military officials said the number of attacks on U.S.-led coalition and Afghan troops has tripled since that deal was reached.

"North Waziristan must be judged on harsh, hard realities," said Sen. Richard Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois, who together with Reed spent a few days in Afghanistan during a regional tour that included a stop in Pakistan. "If (the violence) is increasing, then clearly that policy has to be reassessed and re-evaluated."

Reed and Durbin met with Afghan and U.S. officials, touring the country on the same day that two suicide bombers blew themselves up in eastern Afghanistan, killing one policeman and wounding seven other people.

The first bomber tried to enter the main police compound in the eastern Khost province, said provincial police chief Mohammed Ayub.

The blast, in the city of Khost, wounded eight policemen and eight civilians including two children, Ayub said. The bomber's body parts were scattered around the blast site, he said.

The second bomber killed himself and wounded a taxi driver after police stopped to search him at a checkpoint 15 kilometers (10 miles) southeast of Khost, Ayub said. No police were injured in the second blast.

The attacker was traveling in a taxi coming from neighboring Pakistan, he said.

Resurgent Taliban militants stepped up their campaign of suicide bombings against Afghan and foreign troops in the country this year.

Afghanistan is going through its worst bout of violence since a U.S.-led invasion removed the Taliban regime from power five years ago.

Just tell them to seal the border with Mexico.

The border is complex. It is not as easy as these politicians think. It is for Pakistan as difficult to control the outflow from Pakistan to Afghanistan as for the coalition troops to control the inflow in Afghanistan. So if Pak fails then the coalition failed the same way. Cheap way to blaim the other.

About Al Qaida or Taleban... There is no Al Qaida connection or WMD in Irac. Who failed to bring democracy in Irac? Who failed to control violence in Irac? And since when did Taleban attack USA? It was Al Qaida and not Taleban that attacked USA. Now NATO fails in Afghanistan and blaims Pakistan... To put it simple. The Afganistani never adapted to occupation. They fought back and, unfortunate for the coalition, they will win this the same way as they did in other wars. Let us be simple. Let us fight Al Qaida and leave the Afghanistani alone. And let us stop barking at Pakistan.

Sallam,

Its easy to blame Pakistan, I got an idea, if Pakistan is not up for the job why dont the coalition forces seal the border???

Its quite simple, if you want a job doing do it yourself...

Dear Munir,
You are right but we travel almost after every month or so back to Peshawar from kabul through the road VIA Torkham border and believe me the border is a mess from both the sides, there is no force at all, Just plane malisia forces on Pak side that are called KHASADAARS no proper immigration, even afghan side has better control over the border but on our side no one asking about passports and things like that, Even there is no check on afghans on our soil, if no check on the afghans living in our cities all over Pak then how can we restrict borders, they are all over the country and due to our tribal areas our tribalmen dont agree on remaining one side, they called themselves dual nationals for their own interests like drugs trafecking and other evil objectives, they have some local organization cards giving them right to move freely on both sides, creating serious concerns on security issues, first of all we have to create data base of afghans living on our soil keep a clese check on them keeping them in camps and the way they are doing businesses specially in N.W.F.P and Quetta, keep a close check on our borders and living at tribal arear and poeple living there and once and for all disabla there FATA/Tribal status, merge them with the BALOCHISTAN and NWFP, Pak establishment should remove or finish the refugee status of afghans living on our soil send them back to thier homeland and then strict the border, Afghans can visit then but no without proper papers and VISA, i think the afghans are the main issure of security in PAK and Afg and there movment must be restricted inland and on borders, i think GoP must do above mentioned steps to control the things at our homeland.

Regards

There is a thin line diffrentiating btw the AQ and Taliban, and for that same reason for those 3 senators both are the same and equal threats.

NATO is blaming Pakistan because it feels the influx is from the pakistani side and there is nothing that they can do abt it.

Its better that pakistan dont do or say anything similar.
The next step would be to use airforce for bombing your tribal areas and that would kill a whole lot of your men.
