U.S. Navy research vessel begins 8-day visit to central Vietnamese port

HANOI, June 22 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Navy's research vessel, Roger Revelle, docked at Tien Sa Port in Vietnam's central Da Nang city on Friday morning, beginning its eight-day visit trip to the city, reported Vietnam News Agency Friday.

The mission was made under a cooperative program on oceanic research of the South China Sea and interaction of the sea and mainland between the Vietnam Ministry of Science and Technology and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), according to the report.

During their stay, 28 U.S. officers and sailors will provide training courses for Vietnamese scientists and researchers in oceanic studies in service of the latter's oceanic research and management.

The vessel is scheduled to depart on June 29.

Roger Revelle belongs to the U.S. Navy and is run by the Scripps Oceanic Institute of the University of California in San Diego. The ship is equipped with modern facilities for oceanographic research

Its visit highlights partnership between ONR and the Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology as part of a five-year research endeavor, the Joint Vietnam-U.S. Research Program on the Oceanography of the Vietnamese East Sea and Land-Ocean Interaction.

"The circulation and structure of the Vietnamese East Sea is strongly driven by monsoon winds and precipitation," said Scott Harper, ONR program manager for the project. "This leads to interesting seasonal variability that can be hard to model or predict without a good basic understanding of the physical processes involved. Through this project, we will be able to improve forecasts from our integrated weather, wave and ocean models in the Western Pacific, which will enable safer and more efficient naval operations."
Harper added that it will be interesting to see if global change has impacted the region's oceanography in any way, and to explore what changes might be expected in the future.

"Science expands our knowledge of the world and deepens our understanding of each other," said David B. Shear, U.S. ambassador to the country. "This program will strengthen relationships between the U.S. and Vietnamese scientific communities and provide key information to help Vietnam address pressing environmental challenges, such as climate change."

Don't worry bro, we have some experiences when handling such kind of policy plot with all most superpowers in the world: Russian, France, China and USA...we can know a little about mentalities of them. With whom we can trust, with whom we have to take necessary cautious because such man say voluntarism help but try him best to cheat us.
At least in this visiting trip we can make familiar whit such kind of facilities are provided on ship.
