U.S. cities step up removal of Confederate statues, despite Virginia violence

(Reuters) - Undeterred by violence over the planned removal of a Confederate statue in Charlottesville, Virginia, state and city leaders across various U.S. southern states said this week they would step up efforts to pull such monuments from public spaces.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan on Tuesday joined a growing list of officials seeking to remove statues as a national debate flared anew over whether monuments to the Confederacy are symbols of hate or heritage.

Actually they are probably removing them more to save them from vandals than agreeing that they should be removed.

I have to agree with Trump, whats next removal of George Washington? Or Ben Franklin because he liked being nude? We're talking about a different time. There are statues of Lenin standing tall.

Get rid of them all, why not? Either leave them all or get rid of them all since you'll find controversy among 99% of them. Put them in museums or relegate the forefathers strictly to Washington DC grounds, just like one of the most impressive statues of one of the greatest men of all time, who belongs in that 1%.

That makes much more sense, actually.

The biggest irony of the "Unite the Right" neo-Confederate/White supremacist nonsense is that it has brought a ton attention to these Confederate (traitorous) monuments, and will hasten the removal of many of them.

Good job "Alt-right". :enjoy:

Amazing how that's exactly what is happening.

Not everyone with a controversial past should have their statue removed. But statues of traitors should not be allowed. Confederate statues should be moved to museums. They should not be erected on public property. We don't honor traitors.

Trump comparing George Washington and Thomas Jefferson to traitors to the United States like Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson was one of the most disgusting things I have ever heard.

If the geniuses had just kept their mouths shut and stayed away from Charlottesville, none of this would have happened. As always, their assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.

You can bet a million bucks George Washington statues will come down when blacks are the majority. America was established by the English. English enslaved blacks and genocided native Americans. The history of America is bloody.

Just look what's happening in South Africa where blacks slaughter whites. Western MSM love it when blacks slaughter whites.

I don't think statues of people should be placed in public parks. Statues belong in museums. People should worship only god, not past people.

It's just a rock. Rocks don't hurt people.

No statues of traitors should be on public property. They can be moved to museums.

If you think otherwise, feel free to move to another country. Our country does not honor traitors.

LOL! Trump says:"Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments. You....."
Yeah, The great history & culture of our great country, You know. He is talking about this
God bless him and God bless America!

I've never had a problem with the Confederate Statues after all it is part of Amerikkka's history. It's just funny how far whites will go to appease blacks. When the statues are gone blacks will just find something new to complain about.

The statues were put there to honor fallen heroes on both sides. When Confederates surrendered to the Unionists, they became close friends. When British surrendered to Americans, they became close friends. When French lost Canada to British, they became close friends. Western people have the tradition to forgive and forget. Eastern people are barbaric. If there is one thing eastern people can learn from western people, this is it.

It wasn't white people who wanted to take down the Lee statue in Charlotteville, it was a black person who did, the mayor.

The Supreme Sorcerer in Doctor Strange said we cannot extinguish the evil in each and every one of us. All we can do is try to rise above the evil in us. These young men have too much testosterone and they don't have jobs and they have autism. It's not their fault. The blame is not entirely on them. We should try to help them instead of condemning them as evil.

As Trump said, we should all respect and love each other. Condemn is easy, but it doesn't solve the problem. Condemning is negative. The message of love spoken by Trump is positive. We should have more positive messages and less negative messages.

The black people seek revenge. Look what they are doing to whites in South Africa. They want to do that to whites in America.

This is like saudi arab erecting statues of osama bin laden. He rebelled against his country, fought the infidels and died in battle. Very heroic for many people and part of history. Give him a statue.

This is similar to how the Bolsheviks after the revolution destroyed monuments to the tsars and generals.

This is the age old argument as to whether the southern states committed treason by demanding secession and starting the Civil War. Even though a few years after the war, the Supreme Court did in fact deem secession by the southern states as an "illegal act," it's still heavily debated even today as to whether it really was in fact illegal and hence treason or was it a legitimate act based on the laws of that exact time.

I think the crux of that debate is the fact that slavery wasn't actually illegal or abolished when all of this was coming to a head, and there were major differences between the south and the Union states with regards to specifically the new territories in the west that still hadn't become official states. If you remember we discussed this briefly in the other thread. When Abraham Lincoln ran for the presidency, he vowed to disallow slavery from being implemented in those newly created territories despite there not being any official law that made slavery illegal at that time. So the southern states objected to that and once Lincoln was elected, they decided to secede and fight the national government in order to prevent him from disallowing slavery in these new territories and of course, out of fear that new anti-slavery "rule" would come to the southern states. Is that treason? This is where it becomes debatable because the other side argues that the Lincoln administration didn't have authority to prohibit the laws of slavery without passing them through congress. Basically the prime reason why Lincoln was under tremendous pressure to pass the 13th amendment before or immediately after the war ended. The emancipation proclamation wasn't enough to end slavery should the Union win the war, it was only how to legally control the spoils of war with regards to the slaves, but he needed to make it officially law that slavery was in fact abolished.

So at the time, the Confederates were fighting for what they thought was legitimately a right and to prevent the Lincoln administration from keeping slavery out of the new territories, which obviously would've had a trickle effect and end up also being kept out of the the southern states. So was that in fact "treason" by the true definition of the word? You would think it is, but there is a valid argument to be made on behalf of the Confederates which brings us right back to these statues.

Trump comparing George Washington and Thomas Jefferson to traitors to the United States like Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson was one of the most disgusting things I have ever heard.

His analogy was strictly from the perspective of slave ownership, never taking the much bigger picture into account and what Washington and Jefferson did for the country, as compared to the other two.

General Lee had a distinguished career in the US army prior to the civil war. He fought well in the America Mexico war. Lee's legacy goes beyond the civil war. Lee's statue should not be touched. Lee was a hero of the USA as well.

Like I said, the statue is just an excuse for blacks to test the waters. What they truly want to to lynch whites like what blacks do to whites in south Africa.
