United States and Japan Sign Open Skies Memorandum of Understanding on Air Transportation
Washington, DC
October 25, 2010

Today in Tokyo, the U.S. Ambassador to Japan, John Roos, and the Japanese Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Sumio Mabuchi, signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at establishing an Open Skies air transportation relationship between the two countries.

The provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding will be incorporated into an agreement on Open Skies to be concluded between the Government of the United States and the Government of Japan through an exchange of diplomatic notes. The agreement will strengthen and expand our already strong trade and tourism links with Japan, benefiting U.S. and Japanese businesses and travelers by expanding air service and encouraging vigorous price competition by airlines, while safeguarding aviation safety and security.
